The fact that I was hiking with creatures that three weeks ago I did not believe in, did not scare me. Phoenix would have not cured me if she wanted me to die, and Enzion could have easily demanded that she have killed me, too.
But Noah was a different case. I was still slightly paranoid about him. As far as I knew, he could be trying to make me feel safe so that when Phoenix and Enzion turn a blind eye, he could attack.
The thought of being murdered by him did not shock me as much as I would have expected it would. It didn't send shivers down my spine, or make me want to cry and beg for mercy. Instead, it was as if my heart was hollow, full of nothing but endless space.
I had been through more in my life than what I let on. I once had an older brother who meant the world to me, just as Madeline had. He was only my stepbrother, but he treated me like real family. My mother had died of cancer when I was two, and my father had died of alcohol poisoning when I was nine. my stepmother had the chance to adopt me and my sister, and took it for the money.
She was not a kind woman. When my stepbrother had his grades returned not up to her standards, she locked him in the basement and forgot about him. It was seven days later that she remembered him, but that may have also been because of the smell of rotting flesh that had started to fill the house.
Of course she was questioned, and Madeline and I were taken out of her custody for good.
The smell of spoke seemed to overwhelm me more that the others. As we hiked on, I coughed, trying to release my lungs from the smoky prison that they were trapped in. My throat felt as dry as parchment paper, and I wanted to claw at it with my dagger.
Phoenix handed me a bottle of water, but the feeling of cool, fresh moisture was only temporary.
By the time I could see houses, I just wanted to fall to the ground and sleep.Noah took one of my shoulders whilst Enzion took the other.
"Gosh, humans are weak little things, aren't they?" I heard Phoenix comment.
"Don't you have any medicine for her?" Enzion asked, ignoring her entirely.
Phoenix sighed, and dug into her dress pocket pulling out a small bottle of clear liquid.
"This is really strong stuff, mind you," She warned me. "You'll only need a drop."
She stuck the bottle into my mouth and squeezed it once. I tensed up, waiting for the panic to set in but this time I did not pass out at all. The medicine WAS strong, but tasted of peppermint as it soothed my rough throat and relaxed my tension.
