The second the man's feet left the ground was like time itself had stopped. Phoenix had jumped, transforming into a wolf, growling and snapping at the second man who had also pounced. The third man seemed to have disappeared all together.
The first man had lunged for Jade, but thankfully Noah had grabbed for his throat. I found myself being pathetic and useless, not being able to help.
Arius must have felt that way as well, because he whimpered in a very small voice. Phoenix had left a pile of weapons on top of the bag, but I did not want to use them. I only had one thing I trusted more than Arius, and that was my bow and arrows that were always kept with Phoenix.
I groaned, realizing my pitiful mistake. Instead of going barehanded, I grabbed a flimsy sword and walked down the alley quietly, hoping to sneak up on the third man,
My heart was pounding like a drum as I crept along the cold stone wall. I wanted to scream, but I also remembered that I was doing this because of them.
Because of my friends.
Noah had used that word to describe us, and now I was going to stick to it. And anyways, I had never really had friends before.
I stepped lightly, moving slowly. The element of surprise was not something I used often. I could feel my soul leaving my body as fear tried to tear apart my heart.
All of a sudden, a strong hand grabbed my neck, pushing me against the cold wall. I tried to shout, to warn the others, but the hand was choking me. I tried to wave my sword, but I soon realized that my hand was empty. My lungs were screaming for air.
"Hello, brother," a cold voice greeted, although the tone was not welcoming. My eyes began to water. The man let me crumble to the ground, gasping for air.
"How could you have forgotten about me?" He asked, smirking dangerously. "Your dear twin, Partius. You and I used to have so much fun at camp. You were, after all, not gifted with wolf form as I was."
I groaned as he pulled me up, letting me hang uncomfortably.
"Aren't you going to fight me like the almost human you are?" Partius questioned, his hazel eyes filled with all kinds of crazy, his tone harsh and cruel.
"You were always weak," he spat, angrily. "Weak, foolish, oblivious and selfless. You knew our father said that about you. Yet still, you try to follow in his footsteps. Selflessness may seem like a good thing. But not in the long run, trust me."
He paused for a second, glaring at me.
"Oh and here is a gift for all of the times I forgot to give you one," He grinned, staring at me wildly before letting his fist and my nose collide, sending a whole new world of pain. "See you around, brother."
He disappeared, letting me crumble to the ground once again.
