The second I opened my eyes, I knew something wasn't right. Phoenix was already awake, as Noah had been all night. They were both staring into somebody's soul. The soul of somebody I recognized. Somebody who had broken my nose a couple of hours back.

The sun was rising over the horizon, and I noticed the rain had stopped to leave us on the saturated grass. I glanced up at Arius who was laying on his back, taking in small rays of sunlight carefully. I patted his beak as I yawned, my exhaustion slowly crumbling away like dry mud. Jade was fast asleep, her face peaceful and stress free.

I wish I could be like that, I thought to myself. Having no worries that could affect the people I cared about.

I stood up to go  talk to Phoenix and Noah. I had to try to warn them about Partius. I sat next to them as they stared at him, no longer bothering to even blink.

"I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the guy is Partius," Phoenix breathed. "He looks more like a man than a boy."

I nodded, before standing up again.

"What are you doing?" Noah questioned under his breath, trying not to disturb his attention that Partius had stolen.

"I'm going to talk to him," I explained, acting as if it was no big deal, even though my heart was trying to escape my chest.

"Are you crazy!?" Phoenix grumbled, almost silently. "You can't be serious."

I gulped, hoping that fear wasn't etched into my face.

"I am, I mumbled, surprising myself by the sound of pure determination that my voice had caught. "I'm serious- I'm not sure about the crazy part."

"You're going to get yourself killed if you keep acting like this," Phoenix groaned, before handing me a short dagger. "Do what you have to do, but the moment Noah and I see violence, we're coming to back you up."

I nodded, not at all surprised that I was taking orders from my little sister.

My heart was pounding in my chest, and several times I forgot to breath as I took small steps towards my brother. I couldn't forget the moment that his fist had collided with my nose. It was like the memory was stained into my mind, or as if it were a parasite.

The closer I got to Partius, the more I recognized him. The way he crossed his arms was so familiar that I was almost shocked that he still did it. Partius had run away when we were fourteen to become, as I had assumed, a lone wolf.

The fear was still clutching at my heart as I took one last step, so that I was now shielding my friends from his deadly glare.

"What do you want?" I growled.

"To join your little pack of freaks, of course," Partius grinned, his merciless eyes staring into mine.
