"The lights. Fix those lights up there. Everything is a mess! This dress rehearsal was supposed to be almost perfect." Vester ran his fingers through his hair as the light turned off at the wrong timing.
One of the writers, Dustin, approached him and handed a new copy of the script. "Just what you asked for, Mr. Director. I added the scenes that we talked about last night."
"Thanks. You call me Mr. Director again and our friendship's over." Vester laughed as Dustin scratched his forehead and waved a quick goodbye.
Vester turned to the actors again, "Okay, actors. While those lights are getting fixed, let's have a run on these lines. The first scene in the second act. Cullen and Kenji, I need more emotions."
Friendship and faith--that was the play was about, with two main characters who have been best friends for 10 years. They had a conflict in which one of them has to leave the country to study abroad. Afraid of getting separated, one of them came up with a plan to escape and live their own lives, together.
As he said the cue, the background music played as Cullen and Kenji appeared on stage.
Cullen took a deep breath and said his lines with full conviction, "I promise you, this will work out. This plan was made with smooth perfection. The answer is right in front of your eyes, you just have to trust me and have a little faith."
"Fine! Just make sure this will work out okay? Let me leave a note for my parents." Kenji did his part so well with perfect body language and execution. The two of them were known as the best theater actors of their generation.
After hours of rehearsals, Vester waited for the two actors and his writer. They have been in the same circle of friends since high school, and being able to do their passion altogether was their greatest accomplishment.
"Vester, it should be your treat today." Cullen wrapped his arm around Vester's neck and patted his head. They would mention nothing about the play once the rehearsals were done and it's time for their bond.
"You guys are the reason why my pockets are always empty." Vester joked and ran away from them. The three immediately followed him out of the building.
Kenji grabbed his arm, "Why run when you know you can't get away from us? Today's your treat, no excuses."
"I know. Where should we eat?"
"Somewhere not too crowded." Dustin smiled widely at Cullen and Kenji who just became one of the city's most famous and handsome duo.
"I know a place." Kenji grabbed his phone and began looking at the map. "It's just three blocks away from here. It is a coffee shop. My friend said the café lost some customers because a new high-end one just opened near them."
They all agreed to go there, and while walking they couldn't stop themselves from talking about their past.
Dustin laughed, "I remember when Vester and I met in the locker room after a badminton practice. He was looking at me so intense I thought I couldn't leave that room alive."
"You're making it sound like I'm a bad guy. I just found you so familiar that time, but we actually never met because you were a transferee." Vester reasoned out.
"Enough of that, we are here. The coffee shop's over there." Kenji pointed at a well-lit coffee shop a couple of meters away from them. Its walls were made of bricks and look pleasant even from afar.
The aroma of coffee tantalized them even more. A staff welcomed them once they stepped inside the coffee shop.
"Three glasses of iced americano, double shot, please. Vester, how about you?" Cullen already asked them while on their way, and it so happened that they are craving the same drink.
