i'm stuck in between, a nightmare and lost dreams

I spend the next two days contemplating my love life and the situation with Maisy, and finishing my final exams. When Friday rolls around, I get a call from Calum.

"Hey Cal, how are you?"

"Doin good! I'm with the boys rehearsing our set for tonight. You know that song I played you the other day, 'Beside You'? We're gonna debut it!"

"Oh my gosh, I almost forgot you were having the going away show tonight! I'm so excited!"

"You and Lia can ride with us tonight since it's at Michael's friend's house. I can be outside around six to get you."

"Yeah that sounds good! I'll tell Lia. Have a good day, I'll see you later."

"Bye, Supernova."

As soon as I hang up the phone, I realize that I'm in for a weird night. 5SOS is having their last show before they go record in San Francisco, and there's a chance Maisy is invited too. It's going to be a house show, and the owners are some YouTube boy group that Michael knows. Hopefully it wasn't going to be too wild because as we've established, I'm not that kind of girl.

The day goes by, and I am so grateful that my first full year of college is done. Now I had two weeks to myself before summer classes started. Lia and I spend the day by the pool, and around four we head back to the dorm to get ready for the show. I curl my hair and put it in a half up bun. I'm wearing a cropped white shirt and my plaid pants. I also have my denim jacket and black Doc Martens. Lia has a distressed grey t-shirt with a bright red skirt. Coincidentally, she puts on her denim jacket and Doc Martens too. When we look at each other and realize how similar our clothes are, we smile.

When six o'clock comes around, we grab everything we'll need for the night and start to head downstairs to wait for the boys. Lia suddenly asks, "So you've been quieter than usual the past few days, is everything okay with you and Calum?"

My stomach drops, and I immediately think that she knows that Maisy and I kissed. "Uh, yeah. He's just been busy rehearsing for the show and getting everything ready to go to San Fran. And, uh, finals week is always crazy."

"Oh... okay. Well if you ever need to talk about anything, you know I'm always here."

"Thanks, Lia. I really appreciate that."

It's easy to say that out loud, but I didn't know how I would be able to tell her about what happened with Maisy. Shit, I'm gonna have to tell her eventually.

We get outside of the building and find the band's van waiting right out front. Calum gets out right away and runs up to hug me.

"Supernova! Are you ready for the night?"

"Hell yeah, I've been looking forward to it all day! Y'all are gonna rock."

"Oh, and guess who else is riding with us?"

"Queen Elizabeth?" I joke.

"No, even better! Maisy and Evie!"

Oh, fuck. That's way worse. A forty-five minute drive with Calum Hood and my girl crush? Shit. "Oh, ahahaha that's great. Can't wait for this ride."

"Are you okay? You look a little pale."

"Yeah, yes. I'm good. I just am, dehydrated?"

"Oh, don't worry. I think Maisy brought a water bottle. You guys can share!"

"Perfect."

The two of us pile into the already crowded van, and I somehow end up in between Cal and Maisy. Just wonderful. It was pure torture knowing that Calum had no idea what had been going on, and also knowing that Maisy had been there for it all. The universe was cruel as fuck. To Ashton, too. Because he was squeezed between Maisy and the door of the van. At least I wasn't the only one suffering.

Michael pushes the gas hard, and we're on our way. Evie is in the passenger seat, and has control of the aux cord. Moments into the ride, the boys' song "Daylight" is playing.

"Evie! You're making us look like dorks!" Michael laughs. "We can't be playing our own songs in the car, it's not very punk rock." But after a few seconds, everyone is singing along. This takes my mind off everything for a few minutes. Even though I'm... not in the best position right now, I'm grateful that I've found such great friends in a short amount of time.

It takes us getting through 5SOS' entire discography before we arrive at Michael's friend's house. When we pull up, my jaw drops.

"What the fuck?" Lia whispers.

Outside is the biggest mansion I've ever seen. There are dozens of people scattered throughout the yard with solo cups, and a professional looking stage is set up towards the house. There is no way Michael knows someone who lives here. But regardless, as soon as Michael steps out of the car, a shirtless guy with a vlog camera runs up to him and gives him a hug. I look back up at the house. This night should be... interesting.
