End Up Here

for a while we pretended that we never had to end it

Somehow I am able to fall asleep that night. When I wake up, I'm almost hungover from the chaos of the night before. I automatically reach over to check my phone. There's a text from Calum and an email from the university with the subject: Summer Room Assignment. Figuring that the text from Calum would be easier to read, I open it first.

good morning :) hope you were able to sleep. we're gonna get to San Francisco at around 3pm. if you need something to cheer you up, check outside your door.

I smile at my phone, immediately wondering what he left outside. I get out of bed, noting that Lia is still sleeping. I definitely don't wanna wake her up. Gently, I open the front door. Outside is a coffee and my favorite sweatshirt of Cal's. My heartbeat quickens and I can't help but grinning widely. Why is he so amazing?

I bring everything in and sit down on my bed. I put on the sweatshirt and snap a picture to send to Calum.

you're so sweet!! i hope you're having a safe ride (aka Michael's not driving lmao) let me know when you have a free moment and maybe we can FaceTime!

I close out of iMessage and open my email. I'll admit, I'm nervous to see if me and Lia will be rooming together this summer. I'd finally gotten in the groove of things, and too much change is not what I need right now. I open the email and see my new room number. Below, is my new roommates school email address. I don't recognize it as Lia's, ugh. They better be cool, or this summer might be a bust. I decide to send them an email and introduce myself to my new roommate.

hey, I got an email from the school saying that we're roommates this summer! my name is nova, maybe we can grab lunch sometime and get to know each other before our move in?

Satisfied with my message, I press send and decide to get dressed. I keep Calum's hoodie on and change into jean shorts. Lia wakes up a few minutes later. She grabs her phone and curses.

"What?" I ask.

"Was gonna text Luke. But then I remembered he fucked One Direction's tour manager. Fun!"

"I have one more piece of bad news for you. We're not roommates for the summer. Just got the email from school."

"Well fuck me! Why is this all happening right now?"

"Maybe Mercury is in retrograde?"

"Fuck Mercury. Maybe we should pack today. I could get my mind off things, like cheating assholes."

"That sounds great. Let's get some breakfast and then start packing."

Lia puts on a plaid pleated skirt and a band tee. We both grab our Doc Martens and head to the dining hall. There's a buffet but there's not a lot of kids. It looks like a lot of people have already gone home for the summer.

"Oh my God! Evie's my new roommate!" Lia exclaims after we sit down and start eating. "She just emailed me. Finally some good fucking news."

"That's great! I'm so nervous to see who mine is. Hopefully they write back soon."

We finish up breakfast and I steal some donuts to bring back to the dorm. We spend the next few hours packing, until my phone dings. It's Cal.

we just made it to San Fran! things are super hectic right now, but hopefully i'll get a chance to call later on. and thanks for the new lock screen ;)

I smile at the fact he arrived safely, but a part of me begins to worry if this is how it's going to be the whole time they're recording, with him possibly too busy to call. I go to reply, but before I can, I get a notification from my email. I click into the message and my jaw drops.

hi nova. i guess we'll be seeing a lot more of each other now.
