That night after Genevieve got back from work; I drove back to my tiny apartment and grabbed a beer from the fridge.
I sat on my couch as I looked out over the city.
I was in this place because of my mother.
My mother was the reason for my job.
She wanted to hurt me just like I had hurt her.
She wanted me to pay for the reality that I had tossed her into.
I looked down at my phone as I looked at the number.
“You are calling international.”
“I don’t pay the bill.”
I laughed back at her, “Natalie, what do you want?”
“I'm just wondering about something.”
I looked down at my empty beer. I went back to the fridge and grabbed another beer. “What Natalie?”
“Will you be willing to room me for a few days?”
I stood up, “What are you talking about?”
“I'm coming up to hang out with you but I don’t wanna pay for a hotel.”
“I sleep in a one bedroom apartment and my bed is a full.”
“OK I am getting a hotel.”
I jumped up on the counter as I cracked the beer open.
“What are you drinking?”
“Does it matter?”
“Rough day at work or something, I mean you went out there for this massive job your mother set you up with.”
“NO Natalie, she just set me up.”
“What does that mean?”
“She coined me as a nanny. I'm watching two kids 5 days a week.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?”
“She is getting back at me for sleeping with that guy.”
“You mean the new state governor that is now your mother’s boss and the hottest thing in this state?”
I nodded my head, “Yea Natalie, that guy.”
“Does it really matter; you fucked the hottest and youngest governor this state has ever had.”
I took another drink of my beer.
“I mean I would kill to have been with him now. I mean you just did what everyone wants to do.”
I laughed back at her, “How are things there?”
“Never come home.”
I looked down at my phone as it died on me.
