Juli's POV:
As Ms. Gem walked into the room I looked up and saw her apologising to why she was late. She explained that the teachers had a short meeting about the school's upcoming exchange student program which was to happen next school year. And since this school year was close to an end, they were already preparing for the event.
We didn't live in a city, just a small countryside along the West corners of America. I didn't get why and how we were able to host an exchange student program but I guess we raised quite a lot during last year's fundraising event which I remembered lasting for a whole week. There were no classes then and I was relieved.
Ms. Gem first explained how we were supposed to behave during the whole time we had visitors from the city. She stated that the neighboring school was one for the children of successful business people in the city. Great, all we need were spoiled, rich, bratty kids looking down on our school. Don't get me wrong, I don't want it to happen. I was just worried of how it will push through.
"Anyway, that's a whole 15 minutes of the time supposedly spent for reciting poems so let's get started, finish off what we're able to do for the day and I guess continue tomorrow since we've covered up all the whole syllables anyway," Ms. Gem said.
She brought along with her a bowl full of names of partners which she told us to drop yesterday. She picked a pair of names from the bowl for each partners.
Most of the partners were bestfriends meaning that partners were either both girls or both boys.
As there were pairs of boys who were partners, they didn't take their recitation too seriously. Some made us laugh. As for the pair of girls, they talked about how they were going to be bestfriends forever and how they'll always have each other's backs. With each pair of names being called out, I was starting to think that all pairs were either both girls or boys. I'm guessing it was only me and Bryce being all couple-like as partners.
Finally our names were called. Ms. Gem said that we were going to be the last ones because there was only 15 minutes left till class ends.
"Oh my, first pair who are seemingly more than just bestfriends," Ms. Gem said with a wink.
The whole class roared with 'ooooh's' and I started to get nervous. Bryce saw and held my hand. Though it calmed me down, the whole class roared even louder. But this time, I didn't care. I was more determined than ever to get this thing done.
Just kidding. The whole class's eyes were all dawned on us. Some girls shot me a spiteful look while boys chat in a whisper.
"Okay class, please quiet down. Ms. Baker, why dont you start off?" Ms. Gem added.
I started breathing double time. I never wanted to be the center of attention. I scanned the whole room and yep, I was done for.
Bryce gripped my hand even tighter. He saw I was nervous so he started with his poem instead.
"I used to not believe in miracles
I never believed in wishes
I used to not get oracles
I used to never like kissesHaving you near me now
Makes my whole world whirl
And until you hear my vow,
You'll know you're as special as a pearlNo one could ever stoop to your level
No matter how much they try
If you ever bid me farewell
You'll see how much I'd cry
