adrenaline rushed through their bodies as they ran after thor. they were young, only having lived about five hundred years so far.
"leave him alone! he has training to do!" odin yelled, causing the girl to flinch. then he took thor into the room and shut the door, not even glancing at the other two.
she looked at thor's brother, loki. he was glaring at the closed door. "we don't need him anyway."

>500 years later<
"loki, stop!" the girl laughed as he carried her around the halls.
"stop what?" he smirked, making him look even hotter.
"put me down." she lightly pounded on his shoulder.
"i quite like this, though."
"lokiiiiii." she drew his name out.
"astriddddd." he repeated her name the way she had said his.
she couldn't help but giggle. "where are we going anyway?"
"to the kitchen!"
she wrapped her arms around his neck, causing his heart to lurch. "didn't odin tell us to train?"
loki rolled his eyes. "who cares? i'd rather go make cookies with you."
she kissed his cheek. "loki, you have to forgive your dad. he's only trying to help you."
loki's grip tightened. "no, he's not, ash. he only cares about thor. everyone only cares about thor." he was starting to get angry so stopped walking. "no one ever pays attention to me."
she leaned back, wrapping her legs around his waist, so she wouldn't fall. he put his hands under her thighs, trying to ignore how well they fit together.
"don't say that, loki."
"why not? it's true!"
"no! i care about you. i pay attention to you. you're my best friend, loki. it's always been me and you. not me and thor."
"only because thor's always busy."
she grabbed his face. "if neither of you had anything to do, i'd still pick you. always. i love you, loki."
"not how i love you," he muttered.
"what are you talking about?"
he sighed and slowly released her. "maybe we shouldn't hang out today."
"why not?"
he hesitated, avoiding her eyes.
"loki," she grabbed his hand. "you can tell me."
loki took a shaky breath, which worried her. loki was never this nervous. he was always confident, brave. he looked at their hands, then pulled away.
"i'm in love with you, astrid."
"what?" did he really say that?
"since that day we were chasing thor and then dad made him go train... it's always been me and you. best friends. but i've wanted to be more." he stepped farther away.
her heart dropped. she didn't know what to say. she'd only ever been close to loki. she didn't know if he made her feel different than anyone else would because she hadn't ever been friends with anyone else. "loki..." they were young.
he looked at her and she watched his shoulders fall as their eyes connected. "i understand. i'm sorry." he started walking away, dejected.
she grabbed his hand. he stopped walking but didn't turn. "how do you know?"
"know what?" his voice was harsh, making her flinch. "sorry."
"how do you know you love me?"
his head fell. "because... you make me happy. you make my heart race every time we touch. the second we part, i miss you. i want to spend the rest of my life with you. i'd do anything for you."
she felt the same way. "but how do you know that's not just how best friends are supposed to make you feel?"
he chuckled dryly, "i don't think so, ash."
she walked to his front. "i feel that way, loki. but i'm scared."
he brightened. "of me?"
"of love."
he pulled her toward him. "don't be. i'll take care of you, ashy. forever."
she pulled his face down. "you and me."
their foreheads were together now. "forever."
"i'm in love with you, loki."
their eyes closed. "and i, you, astrid."
