"harrison?" tom choked into the phone. he was leaning against his front door.
"yeah, it's me. you alright?"
"jake and i, well, we broke up," saying the words out loud hurt even more.
"tom... i'm sorry. why?"
"they- the agents, they wanted us to tell the fans that our flirting was all a joke. they said we couldn't release our relationship to the public."
"that's fucked. just because you're bi doesn't mean that you're fans will stop supporting you."
"they said that's not why." tom rubbed his wrist. "they said it's because jake's older than me. it was too much of an age difference."
"and you couldn't keep it private?"
"i- well, no. i thought- it's just too hard. and they wanted jake to have a fake girlfriend, but i can't watch that."
"even when you know it's fake?"
"it's too hard already, haz!"
"i know, tom. but he makes you happy, doesn't he?"
"sometimes that just isn't enough." then tom hung up. he didn't want to talk about it anymore.
he already missed jake, but he couldn't tell him that anymore. "i'm sorry, jake," he said to the empty house. "i love you."
those three words made him cry even more. he wished jake was there. he wished they could be public. he wished people wouldn't hate him for his decisions. he wished he could make his own choices.
he sent a text to his groupchat with tuwaine, harrison, harry, and sam. "who wants to go drinking?"

so they went. and tom drank. a lot. harrison had explained why tom was upset to everyone else, who immediately apologized and bought him even more alcohol.
"i miss him so much," tom said, taking another drink. "i regret doing it."
harry took a drink, too. "it's probably for the better, tom. you guys are far apart in age. that might cause problems later on."
tom hiccuped, "i have to go to the bathroom." once he got to the bathroom, he pulled his phone out and called jake.
"tom?"
tom grinned, "jake!"
"is everything okay?"
tom's grin dropped. "i miss you, jake."
"tom..."
"and i'm sorry," he hiccuped. "i'm so sorry. but it's better, right?"
"i don't know, tom." jake sighed. "i just don't know."
"i still love you," tom leaned against the wall.
"are you drunk?"
"just a little."
"do you need me to pick you up?"
"they're here."
"who's there, tom?" tom heard a car start through the phone. was jake leaving?
"harry. and, and haz and tuwaine. sam's here."
"tom?" he heard harry.
"i have to go. they don't know i called you."
"tom, wait-" but tom hung up anyway.
"who were you just talking to?" harry had his arms crossed.
"n- no one." tom leaned against harry as they walked back to the bar. "i need another drink."
he kept hearing jake's start. was he going somewhere? did he have someone new? is that where he went?
"are you tom holland?" he turned to see a blonde haired girl that was the same height he was. she was wearing a tight black dress.
he took another drink. "i am."
she glanced behind her, then back at him. "would you like to dance?"
"no. i have a-" then he stopped. he didn't have a anything. not anymore. he had a jake, but he was pretty sure jake had a new anything. "yeah, i do." and the girl grabbed his hand to pull him on the dance floor.
