barnes' girl.

"hey, cap?" one of the men that was with bucky called out.
steve turned, "yeah?"
the man, lance, cocked his head. "you and barnes were friends for a while, right?"
steve shrugged. "since we were kids, why?"
lance smirked, the rest of the boys now watching their conversation. "so, you know who barnes' girl is?"
steve laughed. "bucky doesn't have a girl."
the guy beside lance took a swig of his drink before asking, "then who the hell is stevie?"
steve froze. "uh, wh- what?"
"barnes went on and on about some girl named stevie. sounded like he wanted to marry her, honestly," the man responded.
lance threw his head back and laughed loudly. "he was whipped, completely."
steve was about to lie, to tell them he never even heard of a stevie. there was no way bucky was dumb enough to talk about him like that.
but he didn't get the chance because suddenly bucky was beside him. bucky raised himself on his toes to throw an arm over steve's shoulder, then beamed at him. "hey, stevie. what are all you lads on about now?"
steve's mouth fell open as he looked at the rest of the lads. they didn't even look surprised. lance raised an eyebrow, "oh, so this is stevie?"
bucky's arm fell. "i- well, uh-"
"we don't care, barnes," lance reassured him, seriously. "we aren't going to tell on you guys for being together."
"we aren't together," steve blurted out, still shocked.
lance laughed, "well you should be. you guys obviously love each other."
"we're not.. gay," bucky shook his head.
lance rolled his eyes, "whatever, barnes. if you aren't together, then you aren't. and if you are together, then we won't tell anyone anyway. that's your business. love's love."
steve couldn't help it, he sneered. "we're both guys, that's illegal."
"dunno why," lance shrugged again. "there's some guys i would get with, so i don't know why it's such a problem."
steve and bucky were still just standing there, so another guy spoke up. "you guys getting a drink or what?"
so they all drank together, like the conversation never happened.
