"BUCKY!!" i woke up screaming for my best friend.
the door swung open, revealing bucky and the other avengers. "cap. what's wrong?"
i looked at bucky. his hair was longer now, his eyes not as bright, but it was still him.
i saw him falling again and my heartbeat sped up. "bucky..," my voice was low, cautious. my breath began to quicken. it felt like all of my asthma attacks had felt, except i didn't have asthma anymore.
bucky stumbled toward him. "yeah, it's me, steve. are you okay?"
"i couldn't save you. i let you go."
bucky slowly blinked. "you didn't let me go. it broke. i couldn't hold on. that's not your fault."
"i'm the one who made you come."
"no you didn't. i chose to come. you just wanted to help people and i couldn't let you go alone."
everyone else had left us alone, so i wasn't embarrassed to ask him to stay in here. "like when we were kids?" bucky just stared at him, not responding. "you don't have to, of course."
"what if, well... i'm not the safest person to be around."
"bucky, that wasn't you. you're okay now."
"it was me. it was my body. it was my hands killing them. my legs chasing them. it was me."
"hydra brainwashed you." i reached for his hand then dropped it. we weren't that close again yet. "even stark knows it wasn't really you."
bucky's shoulders dropped. "are you sure?"
i nodded. "yes, definitely."
bucky took his shirt off and laid down. "goodnight steve."
"goodnight buck."
then bucky pulled me against him, curling to eliminate any space. "i missed you," he mumbled against my head. i slowly blinked.
i turned. now we were chest to chest. "i missed you, too."
and then we fell asleep.

what we didn't know is that the rest of the avengers checked on us later on. they were confused on our position, but we didn't care.
we'd always slept like this, and hopefully always would
