sam walked away, carrying the shield. "go talk to him," he nodded back at steve.
bucky looked at him. "i don't know if i can."
"you should." then sam walked back inside.
bucky pulled his hands out of his pocket and walked over to the bench. "why?"
steve looked at him. "why what?"
bucky sat down next to the man. he couldn't call him steve. this wasn't his steve, he didn't know this person. "why would you leave?" bucky squeezed his eyes shut.
"i just wanted a life, buck. i wanted to see how it was to be with peggy."
"you didn't know her, steve!"
"what's it matter?"
"because you left ME. i don't have anyone but you, steve." bucky looked out at the lake. "you should've just left me dead."
"don't say that," the man's voice was sharp.
bucky chuckled dryly. "why not? because your reasons don't make sense to me." he stared at the man beside him. "why risk everything for me if you're just going to leave?!"
"because i didn't think it was a big deal! you have sam! and the rest of the avengers would take you in."
bucky looked up at the sky, avoiding steve's eyes. "the only thing i have in common with sam is you."
steve looked at his hand, playing the ring. "i didn't know if you'd even care, buck. i thought it'd be okay."
bucky finally looked at him. "was it good?"
"yeah, it was great."
bucky smiled. "good." then he grabbed steve's hand, and steve saw a tear fall. "i've always loved you, steve. i didn't expect the end of the line to come so soon, but here it is. i'm glad you had a life." then he stood and left steve to his thoughts.
'i've always loved you, steve.' steve realized then that he had made the wrong choice. and he would always regret it.
