ISADORA'S POV

"What's wrong, little miss knight? Are you feeling the pressure of having all these eyes focusing on you?" The high consort suddenly asked me as she sips her tea.

"We were devastated knowing that our little Camille was treated like trash by her ex-husband. Virtra was not happy knowing a man like Camille's ex-husband dares to do such heinous act to her. Even though we're here because the queen dowager asked us to look through the king's situation, we're more concern about our little Camille's safety." The high consort suddenly smiled at me.

"Did Camille told you that if you agreed to work under Hawthorne ducal house, you would have the benefit to work for us? You will have a far better future, and both you and your family will prosper if you do your job right. Working under the shadow empress is an honour not all soldiers can have. You're lucky." I didn't realise this fact. If the high consort didn't mention this, I wouldn't know about it.

"But since Camille didn't use her power to force you to work for her, she must've respected your decision and opinion." I turned towards the duchess's whereabouts and rethought about the offer. Sure, the benefits are more than what the Knighthood had offered, but, do I have the heart to leave my order?

"Duchess Hawthorne, why are you sitting next to the imperial consort? Are you trying to make yourself shine even brighter than you already are?" What is wrong with this duke?!

How dare he said something so rude to the duchess! The high consort seems to sense my anger when she raised her hand to me.

"No need. Just watch and learn. If you decide to work for Camille, you have to learn how to read the room. If I have to compare to the harsh training she received while growing up in Galatea, this is nothing. I mean, just look at the person sitting next to her. Even a glance from the imperial consort is enough to make you tremble in fear. Even Camille's real parents can't do anything to Virtra." I released my hand from my sword handle.

"And why do I have to listen to your baseless nonsense? You're nothing compare to me, milord." I turned to the imperial family and observed their reaction. They seem unfazed by this. Is this a regular occurrence in every royal banquet?

Even the regent who acts as the representative for the king didn't dare to say anything. And the duke is one of his henchmen!

"My dear 'Hydrangea', you have a lot of work to do. You can start with this uncivilised duke. How dare he look down on my little girl." Everyone gasped except for the duchess. Wait, she doesn't approve this revelation?

The queen dowager stood up from her seat and ordered the death of the duke. The Hawthorne knights suddenly appeared and dragged the duke away from the banquet. I know what is going on. They're trying to flex their power to those who plan to rebel against the monarch.

"On our way here, we came across a mysterious village. We were quite surprised to see the state of that village and ponder the reason why. I wonder if someone in this hall could explain to me why did you scorch all those men, women, children and even the elderly to crisp." Several officials showed signs of panic.

The regent stepped up.

"Answering the imperial consort question, we have no other choice because we found traces of an unknown infectious disease. It's only natural to deal with such a situation by killing them all." I was quite surprised to hear the reason that the regent provided. Even the queen was surprised. So does that mean the regent didn't inform the royal family?

"Are you certain that they can't save? Do you swear to God that they can't be cure at all?" The imperial consort inquired. The regent choked on his words.
