THIRD PERSON POV

"What did empress mother say to you? Since we came back from the court, you've been distancing yourself from me. Please tell me what's going on. If you keep your mouth shut, how am I suppose to help you?" The dame sighed before facing the duchess.

"I told her that I would find the real culprit who attacked the empress of this Empire. If I manage to find the real assailants, the shadow empress will grant our marriage. I know it sounds crazy, and I know you're not ready to have someone new in your life but-," the duchess placed a hand on the dame's mouth.

"Don't you want to marry me?" The duchess asked.

"I do. But we haven't known each other long enough. Don't get me wrong, your grace. I do wish to live my remaining life with you, and I wish we could go on until death comes upon us but-," the duchess chuckled before slapping the dame across the face.

"Get a hold of yourself. Even if empress mother forces us to marry each other, we can always ask the imperial mother to have a moment with empress mother. Sure, we're going against the shadow empress imperial order, but even empress mother has someone whom she afraid of." The duchess leaned towards the dame before hugging her as if her life depends on her.

"After my last marriage, I wish that we can go through the phase where I can enjoy the life of being in a relationship. I want to know how does it feel to be madly in love. Isadora, will you be able to give me that feeling?" The dame returned the gesture by hugging the duchess back.

"I am your sword and shield, Camille. Of course, I'll stay and keep you company. And if the duchess doesn't mind being in love with a commoner, I'll do what I can to give you and your children endless love. I'll protect those who important to you. I will kill anyone who wishes to harm you. I will do anything for you." The duchess smiled.

"Where are you going?" Camille inquired when the dame reached out for her sword after she pulled away from the hug.

"I'm going to interrogate the knights who were on duty that day." Camille sighed before she took one of the emblems from the table and helped the dame by pinning it on her chest.

"My decision on giving you this emblem to wear is wise. Showcase yourself with pride, Isadora. And let me warn you about the main palace. It is not as peaceful as you might think. They hide their feelings well, and if you make a false move, it's over for you." Camille looked up to Isadora.

"Empress mother probably wants to test you out. That woman is the worse when it comes to scheming things. But I guess that personality of hers is the reason why the Empire could be prosperous to this day. The things empress mother had done to have the power she holds now was crazy. One might even think if she's human or not." Isadora then became curious about the mask the shadow empress wore all the time.

"What's with the mask? Did something happened to her facial?" Camille shakes her head no.

"Nothing happened to her. It's just she must keep on her mask while meeting others who are not her concubines or her children. That woman has never aged a day since she made a pact with the 'devil.'" Isadora was even more confused with Camille's explanation.

"What do you mean?" Camille shrugged her shoulder.

"Some things are meant to be a secret. But I can assure you that what empress mother did was for the people she loves the most." Camille smiled as she helped Isadora strapping her sword around her waist.

"Once you're done investigating this matter, I would like to have a decent date with you. Let me show you around the Empire since this is your first time here." Isadora nodded.
