Diamonds - RayLynn

~3rd Person POV~

Jessica smiles and falls back onto Ray, hugging him tightly, like if she lets go he might pull another fast one on her. After a long moment of peaceful silence, Jessica lets Ray off the floor. She looks back at the door, then the bed, and remembers what she'd found earlier.

"Oh, I found something," she tells Ray. Confusion falls over Ray. What did he have hidden?

"What?" He asks, following her into his room. She reaches onto the shelf and picks up the diamond ring, and all the memories come flooding back to him.

"What's this?" She asks, handing it to him gently.

"It's a diamond ring," he answers monotonously as he stares at it. Jessica senses something off about him.

"Do you not like it?" She questions. "I'll put it back." She moves the previously thrown picture and tries to take the ring back. Ray's hand quickly closes tightly around it.

"No! It's fine," he tells her. "It's um," he hesitates, not wanting to remember Kendra and Carter the way this makes him remember them. "It's called a wedding ring."

"What's that?" Jessica continues to bombarde Ray with questions about it.

Ray sighs before continuing to explain, "when two people love each other a lot, the man will get down on one knee and propose an offer to the woman to live together for the rest of their lives. This ring sort of seals the promise."

"Why do you have one?" She asks.

"I um," he stops for a moment to think.

"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," she tells him.

"No, I should," he admits. "Last year, there was a woman on the Waverider. Her name was Kendra. We ended up getting left behind on a mission and we built a life together. She and I spent two years together there and she taught me that I could fall in love again after Anna had died." He gives a sort of reminiscent smile.

"But she was destined to be with someone else and I couldn't do it if she was just going to keep running back to him. They're good people, they are," he seems to be convincing himself more than Jessica. "Now all I'm left with is this." He looks down at the ring.
