Vio's POV

The little girl looked into my eyes, and I, into hers and I immediately  noticed something was wrong.

Her eyes were jaded, as if she’d seen too much, even though she was so young.

She wriggled up and out of the sleeping bag, and quickly got to her feet, her eyes suddenly full of fear as I stood.

She turned on her heel, but I realized what she was going to do a second she did it and gently, but swiftly grabbed her around the middle.

She thrashed for a few moments before I said;

“Calm down. I’m not going to hurt you.”

I set her gently down and she began to curl up and make herself as small as possible.

Her ragged dress was stained with earth and innumerable other things, one of them looking a lot like blood.

I crouched down and picked up my hat, and at this, she curled up even more, as though she thought I was about to hit her with it.

“ I promise no harm of any kind will come to you when you’re with me.” I promised, and she looked up, raising her head a fraction of an inch.

“What’s your name? “ I asked softly.

“L-lyra” She stammered quietly, her voice not much louder than a whisper, but muffled seeing as she was still curled up tightly.

She seemed to gather a tiny shred of courage, and asked more loudly, “What’s yours?” the squeaked and hid her head again, trembling in terror.

“V-vio…” I stammered. “Why are you afraid? I’m a hero from the castle. I help people. Not hurt them.”

But I never got an answer from Lyra. I got a loud shriek and a hard blow across my face from a person behind me.

Caught off- balance, I toppled over, but quickly got to my feet again and turned around.

My breath caught in my throat as I looked at the face of the girl who had just hit me.

She was beautif- My thought stopped with a halt as she raised her arm to strike me again, but this time I was ready.

I instinctively put up an arm to parry her blow. My left arm.

Her third blow stopped in mid-air.

“That mark on your hand!” She said in a slightly accented voice. “ You’re from the castle, aren’t you?!”

“Y-yes… “ I growled in pain. “ And please” my voice much calmer now, “ Don’t commence wailing on me until I know what I did wrong.

“I- I thought you were going to … My sister… “ she said breathlessly.

and with that, I finally understood.

Their father had been selling their bodies for money for years.

That asshole.
