Ruby POV

I walked downstairs and saw Oscar training with Ozpin's cane.

Ruby: You're really getting better, huh...

He looked at me, clearly not expecting me to be there.

Ruby: Are you hungry? It's almost dinner time.

Oscar: Uhhh, yeah... that sounds good. I was about to call it a night anyways.

Ruby: So, you've never fought before?

Oscar: Just the occasional small Grimm. Nothing like this, though.

Ruby: Well, you look like a natural.

Oscar: It's strange... I've only had this cane for a few weeks but I feel like I've had it for a lifetime... longer even... I sound like a crazy person.

Ruby: I mean, uh, yeah just a little, but at this pace you'll be combat ready in no time. Anyways, I'll let you finish up. I'll see you upstai-

Oscar: How do you handle all of this?

Ruby: Uh... what?

Oscar: I'm... scared. I'm more scared than I've ever been in my life... than I ever thought was possible. I always knew that I wanted to be more than a farmhand but this... Who would ask for this?

He knelt down and put the cane in his bag.

Ruby: We all went to Beacon because we want to help people... but you're right. None of us asked for this either. We just have to press on and-

He quickly stood up and turned to me. I jumped back in surprise.

Oscar: How can you be so confident? People have tried to kill you! The world's about to go to war all over again! How are you okay with any of this?

I sighed and began to slowly walk around the room.

Ruby: When Beacon fell, I lost a close friend. Pyrrha Nikos. I hadn't known her for very long, but that doesn't change the fact that she was one of the most kind-hearted people I had ever met... but that didn't save her. Pyrrha thought that even if there was the smallest chance of helping someone, then it was a chance worth taking... and because of that, she died fighting a battle she knew she couldn't win.

Oscar: I'm... sorry...

Ruby: I am scared... but not just for me. What happened at Beacon showed that Salem doesn't care if you're standing against her or not. She'll kill anybody... and that scares me most of all. I'd be lying if I said that losing Pyrrha didn't hurt... that I didn't think of her every day since then... that I didn't wish I had spent more time with her. If it would have been me instead, I know that they would have kept fighting too, no matter how dangerous it was. So that's what I choose to do... to keep moving forward.

I wiped the tears from my face and smiled at Oscar.

Ruby: Come on, if we don't hurry Nora's going to eat everything. It wouldn't be the first time. You go ahead, I'll meet you up there.

Oscar walked up the stairs, I decided to say one more thing.

Ruby: Hey, Oscar... This isn't going to be easy... but the fact that you're even trying says a lot about you. You're braver than you think.

He smiled at me and continued walking up the stairs. I looked at the night sky as I heard the door behind me open and close as Oscar left. I thought about the highs and lows that I had had on this journey. Just then, the lights went out, and I heard a voice that was all too familiar. My skin went white and cold as I heard it. I recognized it instantly.
