"Oh? What fresh hell have you brought us, dear?" Helen asked.
That caused a smile to flicker on Morgan's face. "I wondered how it could be that the village of Ninovan is still hidden. They were difficult to find for us, but they use power. They emit heat. They have jobs. People come and go from Ninovan. Children are born. Some leave. None ever talked about where they were born? In theory, the majority of people that might leave are some form of Astral, but Astrals have degrees of talent. Nakoma is Astral, but so far is nowhere near as sensitive to people as her mother is. According to people in Ninovan, and like a Vampire child turning in their twenties, an Astral normally ramps up over time. Angel is an exception. She burned with her talent when she was a child, but it is hard to know if that was epigenetic circumstance: The murder of her father causing an environmental trigger. It worried me, so Angel and I looked around with fresh eyes, knowing the additional things about Ninovan we now have. This time we were not looking for a symbol, but a 'footprint'. The kind of impression a city leaves on the planet."
Morgan re-covered my hand with hers, leaving the folder on the table. Helen picked it up, opened it, and began rifling through it. Helen knows her wife. If Morgan brings a folder in and gives it that type of introduction, the folder is going to be rife with details.
Morgan continued her narration of the 'fresh hell'. "Ninovan has good tree coverage, but there are spy satellites that can read license plates from space and read human heat signatures through roofs. How are they not found? The answer is that Ninovan is found. They are being watched. The people concerned with them is the FBI, and they are afraid they are a cult. You, Melody and John, are not aware of them as Hypernaturals in your agency because no one is saying that they are Hypers. The FBI thinks they are a weird cult, perhaps religious, but apparently leaderless. Maybe a sex cult. Maybe an old hippy commune. In the latter case, the concern is that they are on land the government considers theirs. They have no idea Ninovan has been there for many centuries before Europeans ever set foot on the North American continent. The FBI watches them from time to time. Sends surveillance over them. I used Vampire connections and the co-ordinates to search everything. I wanted to be sure they are safe. They are not. They will be raided at some point soon, to learn what they are and if they are a threat. One worry that they have is that they are possibly illegal immigrants hiding from the government and so ICE might get involved too. As Simi was an escaped slave that went there, the idea of Ninovan as a refugee camp is actually true. It is not how they are imagining it. In either case: given the extensive history of the government forcing out the indigenous, or the government hunting people fleeing from oppression so that they can be returned to it, when Ninovan is raided, and by either agency, their genuine nature will likely become known. Vampires, Astrals, and Sirens all exposed in one raid. The entire Hypernatural world. Now the Ninovan's know about us. Who we are. What we are. Where we live. We would be next."
Helen was handing pages to Rachel after she read them, and they are going around.
Vera tapped one page. "This is a picture of Kevin at the grocery store."
"Fucking great. We need a plan." I said.
"I have a plan." Morgan said.
"Of course you do, my sweet and brainy wife. I should have known. I do not see it in this folder. How long have you had this plan?" Helen asked.
"Came to me on the way home from the office. Call it... Approximately twenty minutes?" Morgan estimated.
Angel stood, ran a signaling fingertip along Vera's arm, and they both went to get fresh drinks for all. They replaced beers all around by harder things. John had a Makers, Melody a Vodka tonic with a twist. Honestly, I have no idea how empathy gets you to drink orders without asking. Both Angel and Vera already know the pile of people around me are Scotch drinkers. Just missing Denise to have the full set.
