I'm trying to get better, I am. But I can't get better if things from my past keep coming back.

...

Explaining the situation between Talia and I took almost half an hour because of the confusion the gang kept expressing. Honestly, I understand why they're confused. I am too.

"So she's mad because Thomas asked you out instead of her?" Katelyn stares into the abyss as she processes my words.

"That's the reason she hated me last year. She accused me of being a 'whore' who would go after girl's boyfriends and crushes." I fiddle with my fingernails. "We were in eighth grade. Who the fuck needs a partner in eighth grade?"

"No offense, (Y/N), but her hatred seems something more than just stealing a crush." Grizz points out.

"I'm aware but, I have no idea what caused her hatred towards me. We were friends. We were best friends, and because of that, I was careful with what I said and did. I never did anything bad towards her. I swear."

"Also, Talia's just toxic. People like that just find some reason to hate someone and turn it into something big. I've had friends like that." Lucinda adds.

"Well, whatever the case, it didn't give her the authority to do those things." Garroth stares at his hands.

"And if she tries to hurt you, we'll be right there, kicking her ass to make sure she gets the message," Katelyn smirks.

"That's sweet but, considering she moved out here for me... she won't stop until she, most likely, kills me."

"Welp, Operation save (Y/N)'s ass has begun." I chuckle at Dante's comment. "Hey, maybe Gene could help?"

"No!" Nearly all of them exclaim. Dante raises his hands in confusion as Aaron and Grizz exchange expressions of confusion towards each other.

"I thought you were a good friend of Gene?" Aaron asks. I bite the inside of my cheek, averting my eyes to the ground.

"You didn't tell him." Garroth mutter.

"Tell me what?" Aaron is beginning to sound agitated.

"I'll tell you at home. It's not that big of a deal-" I earn stares of disbelief from the rest of the group which I choose to ignore. "And anyway we need to get to class before we all get detention from being tardy." I hop off the bench, brushing my hair from my eyes.

"I'll walk you." Garroth offers. I accept, and we both walk out of the empty classroom doing our best to ignore the suspicious stares from behind us.

...

"Okay, your turn." A smile presses to Garroth's lips. "What's your favorite candy?" I hesitate, thinking of an answer. I don't eat candy much, not anymore anyway, but there's one treat I'll never deny.

"(F/T)." Hair falls into my face as the wind blows by. "Every Christmas in the system, my stocking would be filled with them. To this day, it's the best gift I could get."

"Really? Candy? Not... say money? Or a toy?"

"Unfortunately, I grew up with foster parents who didn't want to spend so much money on a child who would temporarily be in their home. The only time I ever got something that wasn't candy or a stuffed animal, was when I was seven. I got a camera- a polaroid to be exact."

"Do you still have it?" He asks.

"No, some kid in my group home smashed it." He cringes and I just shrug. "You really can't have anything special cause kids young and old are going to destroy it."
