VI. The project

KENZIE'S POV

We finished up at the beach and decided we should head back if we wanted to make it back in time for music.

As we arrived at school Emily was stood there at the gate since it was the beginning of lunch

"Oh hey Emily!" I shouted

"Hey Kenz, Johnny. Where have you been?!" She said, clearly worried

"We went to the beach!" I replied

"With him?"

"Yes with Johnny. I wanted him to see the beach"

"But he's dangerou-"
"I mean you missed two lessons today!" She said

"I know but but I thought it would be okay. It's only two lessons"

I then walked off with Johnny

"God what was her problem!" I mumbled

"I think she just doesn't like me" Johnny said

"but your her cousin!"

"Yeah but not all cousin's get along I guess"

"Yeah true. Anyway Lets get lunch"

We walked into the cafeteria and sat down at my table. All of a sudden the popular girl in our year group, Nadia, made her way to my table

"Hiya Kenz!!!" She said

Truth be told, Nadia and I used to be best friends, but left me when she got a boyfriend and became popular

"uh hi?"

"Sooo, are you going ot introduce me to your friend?"

Of course she's after Johnny.

I looked over to him and he looked at me devilishly

"I'm Johnny" he said smiling

"Well hello, I'm Nadia"

Just then the bell rang, we got up and Nadia left. As she walked off, she looked back at Johnny, longingly.

We made our way to music

We walked in and took our seats, the teacher wanted to make an announcement first

"Hello class, today I will assign you into teams to work on a project together for the rest of the year"

I felt Johnny look down at me

The teacher read out the teams

"...and finally Kenzie, Annie, Johnny and..."

Don't be Nadia don't be Nadia

"...and Nadia"

shit.

We split up into our groups so Johnny and I went over to the corner

"Hey again Johnny!" Nadia said. You could smell the desperation in her breathe

"Oh hi"

"Hi guys I'm Annie!"

"Hi I'm Kenzie, this is Johnny and that's Na-"

"I'm Nadia, Hi!!!"

Ugh she frustrates me SO much

"So does anyone have any ideas?" Annie asked

"Oh! Johnny is reallllyyyyy good at the guitar! Maybe he could play something?" I suggested

"Ohh uh I don't mind" Johnny said shyly

"OMG! You play guitar! That's so hot!"

Someone shut her up PLEASE

Johnny and I exchanged looks

"Well Mackenzie can sing!  We could do something with that?" Johnny asked

"Pffft she sings?! Please. No offence but when we were younger you sounded like a dying cat" Nadia confidently said

"Actually, shes really good. I heard her in the car earlier" Johnny stood up for me

"Well we're just going to have to hear her, won't we?" Nadia snidely said

"Oh now?!"

"It's okay I'll back you up on guitar" Johnny responded

I agreed and so me and Johnny decided on a song and began

We started singing If The World Was Ending and everyone INCLUDING NADIA'S jaw was dropped

"Well I guess you've gotten a bit better" Nadia said

To my amazement Johnny then said

"You know what, fuck off, Kenzie was great!"

But the teacher had walked over and he hadn't noticed.

"MR ORLANDO! DETENTION FOR USING SUCH LANGUAGE" the teacher shouted

I knew I had to say something. After all it was me who Johnny was sticking up for

"Sir Nadia started it!" I said

"EXCUSE ME! You can join Mr Orlando in detention too!"

"But!-"

"NOT ANOTHER WORD MISS ZIEGLER"

The teacher then left

"Great" I mumbled

"I'm sorry ken-" Johnny began to say

"It's fine. J-just leave it" I replied, clearly annoyed

know he did it for me but I've never been in detention. My dad's going to kill me if he finds out
