A Morning At School

Suddenly, I realized I was pounding glass. I opened my eyes-I had closed them out of concentration- and saw that I was still in the VR pod. I changed the type to relaxation and read the time. It was 2 in the second cycle. Snap. I opened my pod to see the other two deserted. It was obvious that I wasn’t the only one who unpacked. I changed into my uniform, then used the map to get to the cafeteria. Even before getting there, I could smell waffles and strawberries, as well as chocolate. Man, would that be a good breakfast.

I walked into the cafeteria and saw that there were six tables. On each table there was a cylinder holoscreen. On the top, in big letters, four of the tables had the names of each family group. I was happy to see some of the seats open. At least I wasn’t the only one who got a lot of sleep. Two of the other tables were assigned to staff. I got my meal, which ended up being chocolate chip waffles, strawberries, and a banana with a drink of apple juice. I went over to the Ravenfury table to sit down.

“Hey, Dron. How’d you sleep?” Renea asked. I shrugged. I sat down in between the two guys at the table.

“Maybe the late sleeper is still waking up?” Naki suggested. I nodded, starting to eat my waffles. “No one blames you. We all were up pretty late, and the test was kind of exhausting. It wouldn’t surprise me if any of us had slept pretty late into the morning. Fortunately, classes don’t start until tomorrow, so we have time to relax.”

We all continued eating in silence. I noticed that we all had decided to wear our uniforms. We probably will all end up changing into normal clothes since classes didn’t start till tomorrow. Amika was directly across from me, with Renea on her left, and Naki on her right. The boy on my left was a Zlen, like me. His hair was white and his eyes brown. The boy on the other side was a Kinog, with dark red hair and dark green eyes.

Amika stopped and clapped our hands.

“I have an idea! Why don’t we all say our names, what our favorite color is, and what our favorite food is?”

“Why?” Asked the boy on my right.

“To learn more about each other! We are going to be together for a long time anyway, so why not?”

“You have a point.” Naki agreed. “But because you suggested it, you go first.”

“Ok! My name is Amika Macias, my favorite color is lavender, and my favorite food is...pineapple!”

“Pineapple.” Renea said doubtfully. “Right.”

“What?”

“Pineapple is just not what we would expect, that’s all.” Naki said. “Maybe I’m alone on this, but I thought you would have something like cake or muffins or something containing sugar. Anyone else think that?” The rest of us rose our hands.

“See? Not the first idea in people’s heads.”

“Have you ever tasted pineapple cake?”

“No, but-”

“Then you haven’t fully experienced pineapple! I’ll have to ask for it or make it sometime.” She paused. “Hey, why don’t you go next?”

“Ok. Well, my name is Nakita Briones, though I like going by Naki. My favorite color is dark purple, and my favorite food is cheese potatoes. You’re turn.” Naki playfully punched the boy on my left.

“My name is Alin Piaran, my favorite color is green, and my favorite food is carrots with akita sauce.”

“Isn’t akita a name?” The Kinog boy asks.

“You're thinking of Akina, or Aikita.”

“Ah.” All of Ravenfury looks at me.

“Well Dron, it’s your turn.”
