"Alright. What's wrong with you?" Edmund plopped down on the stone steps at the front entrance of the castle beside me.
I arched my eyebrow. "I don't know what you m-"
"You know perfectly well what I mean! You've been moping around for days. The ball is tonight and I haven't seen you try on one single outfit, unlike Lucy and Susan who have been using the halls as walk ways." I smiled faintly. "And I think it has something to do with Peter."
I placed a hand on my heart as I felt it pound at the sound of his name. "P-Peter? No. Why would you think it has- I just-"
"Look, all I know is that he hasn't left his room all week."
I frowned. "He hasn't?"
"Nope. He's gotten all his meals brought up to him and I happen to know that he told all the staff that if you asked for him they were to say he was busy with important business." Edmund propped his elbow on his knee, placing his chin in his hand as he leaned towards me. "So do you want to tell me the truth now?"
"No." I smirked, rising to my feet. "I've got something I need to do."
I heard him call after me a few times until the sound of his voice became muffled by the distance. I ran the entire way to the high kings room, stopping just outside the door to straighten my dress.
I subconsciously scolded myself for making a fuss over my appearance before knocking twice on the door. It didn't take long for it to swing open.
"Hello- oh." His shoulders dropped and he held the door firmly in his hand. His blonde hair was ruffled as though he had attempted to straighten it moments before, and his shirt was untucked.
I scanned my eyes over him a few times before pushing the door the rest of the way open and letting myself in.
"Excuse me. People are not allowed to just barge into the High King of Narnias' bedroom!" He spun around to face me.
"Your absolutely right." I tried to control my facial expressions, though the sadness appeared to be seeping through. "But I'm not people."
I stepped towards him, satisfied that he didn't flinch away when my palm gently cupped his cheek. "I'm so sorry. You misunderstood the conversation."
He nodded stiffly. "Then explain it to me."
"Okay." I breathed, tugging him lightly towards the bed. "Lucy and I were talking about Caspian." I sighed as he glanced down at his hands. "And when I said those things I was talking him as well. I couldn't see myself with him, not you."
He looked up at me suddenly. "I- you weren't talking about me?"
I smiled at him and leaned forward slowly, connecting our lips. "Never."
He smiled and wrapped his arms around me. "I'm sorry I didn't let you explain. I was just so- the thought of you with him- with anyone other than me just completely- "
I pressed my finger to his lips. "I know. Imagine how bad I felt, thinking you hated me."
He smiled again and stood up, holding his hand to me. "Come on."
"Where?" I laughed, grasping his hand and following him to his closet.
"You have to help pick out something to wear tonight."
