Chapter Forty

Anni POV

I roll over in my bed and let out a groan. Opening my eyes a crack, I let out another groan. Surely on a Saturday morning, getting up before nine should be illegal? I look around my dark room, thankful for the curtains that shade my windows. Sitting up, I rub a hand down my face and make another inhuman noise.

Fumbling around on my bedside table, I try to find my phone without looking. Eventually the slim phone rests in my hands, and I click it to see that I have thirteen unread texts and seven calls. All from Calum. All from about six this morning leading up to about fifteen minutes ago.

I mutter a curse under my breath as I get my passcode wrong, my hands still unable to function properly. Eventually I manage to open my texts and read them.

From Calpal :P

        Anni, are you awake?

Anni I need to talk to you

Shit, Anni answer your phone its serious

I am literally sitting here about to tear my hair out you are frustrating me that much

Anni pick your phone up dammit

I don’t want to tell you over text message

My heart rate picks up as I read that text message. I couldn’t be blamed though. Usually when someone says that in a text message, it means they want to break up. Shit, does Cal want to break up with me? I quickly scan the last of the texts, but my relief is temporarily lived.

Shit, that probably sounded like I wanted to break up with you.

I don’t want to break up with you. Trust me.

You aren’t picking up so I am just going to tell you over text

        Megan’s in the hospital

Last night she got a bunch of glass shoved in her hands and had to have surgery

She hasn’t been discharged yet. Apparently they want to keep her under observation

I don’t think her parents knew about it till like at two in the morning. What kind of parents         don’t even know their kid is in hospital?

Just as I finish reading the last text, my phone chimes with another one.

I know you guys aren’t talking right now, but surely you can overcome your differences         until Megan is actually able to speak without sounding high.

My fingers fly across the touch screen as I reply quickly

From Anni

Sorry, I just woke up then.

From Calpal :P

        Seriously?

From Anni

        What?

From Calpal :P

Your best friend is in the hospital and that is what you reply with first.
