Chapter Thirty Six
Calum POV
"Well sorry, but you jumped to conclusions and thought I was angry with you! That's not fair either!" Anni yells angrily.
I open my mouth to say something more, but the phone fills with a rustling sound then is silent. I am about to hang up, but a single sob runs down the line and my finger freezes over the button.
The sob is followed by another, and suddenly all I can hear is the sound of Anni crying on the other end.
She musn't have realised that she didn't hang up, and now I was sitting here listening to her cry.
Fuck, what had I done. I sat and listened to her cry in silence for several minutes. Why hadn't she stopped? Why hadn't anyone come and made sure she was alright?
I don't say anything, as I grasp my phone tighter in my hand, and stand up from my seat at my desk. Moving towards the door, I pick up my shoes, keys and headphones.
Plugging in my headphones, I make sure I can still hear Anni. It didn't matter that I was angry at her, or her at me, I didn't want her to do anything stupid. I knew Anni wasn't like that, but I couldn't be careful enough.
Walking out to my car, I think: If no one else is going to make sure she is alright, I will. Even if she doesn't want to see me.
---
"Please, Mrs Evans, just let me see her!" I begged, my hands out in front of me.
I stood in the doorway of Anni's house, looking at her mother who stood with her arms crossed, in front of me.
I had met her several times before, seeing as I was always coming to her house. But I was not use to her denying me entry.
"I'm sorry, Cal, but I don't think she is up to seeing you at the moment." Mrs Evans says gently. I shake my head,
"No offence, Mrs Evans, but you're out of your goddamn mind." I say. "I drove all the way here, with my headphones in, listening to your daughter cry through the phone."
Mrs Evans looks at me in confusion. I pull out my phone, and gesture towards it to further prove my point.
"Anni didn't hang up after our argument, she just threw her phone down. So, for the past fifteen minutes I have listened to her sob, and believe me when I say that it was the most gut-wrenching thing I have ever listened to."
I take a deep breath, and continue on.
"Mrs Evans, I really, really like your daughter. More than any girl I have before. Please, just let me talk to her for a minute."
Mrs Evans opens her mouth to speak, but a voice at the top of the stairs interrupts her.
"Mum, let him come up." Anni says, her voice hoarse and sad. Mrs Evans nods, not looking up at her daughter. She opens the door wider and I step over the threshold.
I walk quickly over to the stairs to look up at Anni, but she has already gone. I look back and call a quick thanks to Mrs Evans, before finally plodding up the stairs.
I make my way slowly to Anni's room, trying to think of some possible scenarios as to how this could go. So far, her kicking me out seemed like the most likely of all the choices.
I stopped at the doorway to Anni's room. The door was half open, obstructing my view to where I knew Anni would be sitting. Pushing open the door with a loud creak, I see my girlfriend sitting on her bed, phone in hand.
She sat, looking straight ahead, not acknowledging my presence. I did an awkward cough, and rubbed the back of my neck nervously.
"Hey." I say awkwardly. Anni still doesn't look at me, but simply nods her head. I take that as a sign that I am able to enter her room. Moving in, I stand in front of her, leaning against her desk.
