Poe, Finn, Allyria, and I walked up the stairs of Merri Laniso's palace in silence, our battalions hurrying off to continue fighting in our place. The First Order had been driven back to the outskirts of the surrounding cities, one of the few victories we had had over the past month, and it was all thanks to our unnamed hero in the sky. No one commented on them after we regrouped, but it was clear from the expression on all our faces we had no idea who we were dealing with.
Merri and the Futini twins were surrounding the circular table in her throne room, leaning over a hologram in the center of the Milarian territory. They stood in their self-assigned places as they did in every meeting, but their uncomfort about Jevo's open space was obvious. The leaders of the Quad didn't pay any attention to rumors; they only worked with data and intel proven accurate by several sources. Eliz was the first to notice our presence, turning her head toward the four of us with a grim expression.
"What were the causalities?" she asked my aunt, who shifted uncomfortably on her feet. The Futini sister never wanted the positive news first, she always would say how it distracted from the upcoming tasks at hand. Her numerous braids of victory had been removed, each one undone as more failures on the battlefield occurred. Now, Eliz wore her hair in a simple low bun at the nape of her neck, the loose strands of hair almost symbolic of her stress.
"At least a hundred," Allyria reported, and Eliz hung her head with a sigh. "We weren't expecting the AT-ATs, and the flametroopers managed to get the best of us."
"It's my fault about the walkers," Finn blurted, and I noticed how his hands were shaking. "I gave false data, those men's lives are on my hands-"
"None of us blame you for what happened out there," Merri interrupted him, leaning back up to better address us, more importantly, the ex-Stormtrooper. Her blonde hair had been pulled up halfway in a braided bun, and her normal jewels and accessories had been exchanged for a simple naval blue gown. Still proper, she took the matters of her people's lives to heart and did anything for them, even if it meant killing in cold blood. "You left the First Order over a year ago and this is the first time they've challenged your knowledge. It's a sign that they're growing desperate and will do anything possible to take us down. You and Despina still managed to take the first walker down from what I've heard."
"Yeah, about that," Poe spoke up angrily, and I quickly looked at my shoes as if they were more interesting. I could tell from his tone and the way that the three Quad members tensed that this was going to be a fun discussion. "Let's talk about who took down the second one. How weak is the security around here that an unmarked craft managed to enter a city undetected until we physically saw it?"
"Here we go," I muttered to Finn, who gave a snort.
"Mister Dameron, may I remind you that we are currently at war," Dorman said coldly, his golden eyes flashing. "The First Order is practically at our doorstep; I believe that our 'security' has had more pressing matters at hand than worrying about a prehistoric interceptor."
