Poe and I were sitting side by side in Tekka's hut, twin bowls of bone broth in our hands as we watched our droids communicate excitedly on the other side of the fire while the older man searched for where he had hidden his artifact. BB-8 was a standard BB unit of orange and white coloring with a voice slightly high-pitched than BD's. The bipedal droid barely reached to the bottom of his friend's head, but his energy kept him up to pace.

"I just don't understand..." Poe shook his head in confusion, moving his spoon back and forth in the bowl. "You obviously know the General. She would've offered a safe place for you, even after you stole that X-Wing from us."

"Someone stole an X-Wing?" I asked him innocently. Poe raised an eyebrow at me, tilting his head slightly to the side. "Why would you assume it's me? Who ever said that I fly such an aircraft?"

"First," the rebel started, lifting a finger up in counting, "At least three pilots saw a woman who looked like 'female Damien Anseris back from the dead' take off four years ago. Second, I saw said X-Wing when I was landing. A good hiding spot, I'll give you that, but not good enough for my eyes." All I could do was shrug.

"Well, you got me there."

"Besides that, why didn't you come back?" I turned away from him and stared at the fire, watching the smoke ascend to the roof and out the small hatch to keep us from drowning in it. Instead, it just drowned out the stars. "You're zoning out on me, Anseris."

"I didn't want to," I answered truthfully, looking back down at the fire and its unsteadiness. "I was alone after Luke Skywalker disappeared, and I was angry. I was afraid. I didn't know what to do." I could feel Poe's eyes on me, watching me in understanding. I doubt he knew much about the situation besides what had reached Resistance ears, but I wasn't stupid enough to think that he hadn't heard stories similar to this from others.

"So what did you do?" he asked me softly in curiosity. Blinking away from the flames, I gave him a smile as I rubbed my fingers against the side of the bowl.

"Sent out a distress call. A Milosti royalty ship landed a few days later. I hid the second I recognized their markings; we had learned about the different criminal planets several times in our training. They found me, and I was too weak to fend them all off. That's how I met Merri."

"Empress Laniso?"

"That's her," I agreed. Poe shifted in his seat, completely entranced in my recalling of my past. "You would've never even thought her to be part of such a heinous organization from the way she was. Merri took me in and let me recover under her protection. I became her messenger to repay my gratitude, and through that, I met Jevo and the Futini twins. Not many make it in the Quad's 'important lifeform' file. As a parting gift, she let me choose whatever craft I wanted to explore the galaxy, courtesy of your Resistance. She never did really like your kind."
