---Chapter XXIV - "The Hunt"---
Twenty-five years ago...Artemis Anseris's heart had never beaten at such a rate since she and her sister escaped brainwashed Stormtroopers through the dangerous rainforests of Kashyyk. Promise me you'll never let your guard down, her mother had said before sacrificing herself to give the young girls a better chance of survival. Never call to the Force; never use it for any circumstances. You can never show the world who you truly are, otherwise you will doom yourself to a death worse than this.
Almost twenty years later, the Rebel's best pilot was finally going to break that promise.
"What do we do now?" Damien asked her in a hushed tone, peering past the curtains of the circular window. Jedi hunters were burning down the village huts one by one, an orange humanoid alien leading the group in search for their prey. They had been hiding for months from them, moving from planet to planet to throw the group off their trail. Artemis stayed silent, her left hand slowly moving to the stowed weapon in a holster that most considered at first glance to be a blaster. She had never used it except when Luke Skywalker had gifted it to her; he, his sister, and her husband her the only ones to know its true purpose. "Artemis... what's the plan?"
She released a breath of defeat and retracted her hand, looking up to her husband with a sorrowful gaze. "One of us stays to draw them off so the other can escape... or we both fight together and foolishly hope to hold them off until Allyria comes." As the sound of the hunters' approach grew louder, a tear slid down her face. Artemis knew her sister was on the opposite side of the galaxy and had no chance of hearing her mayday call. "Damien-"
"I'll hold them off," he spoke, his fingers tightening on his blaster. Damien had known the risks when Leia had mentioned the job to them. He had hoped it would be easier; he'd fought in the Imperial army. "You take them."
"I- no!" Artemis shook her head with wide eyes. "These are Jedi hunters, not some scum smugglers! They'll kill you!"
"Well, I'd rather prefer for it to be me than you," he shot back, stress growing between the pair as their planning time dwindled. As he looked at his wife, he knew deep down this would be the last. Their time together seemed to be flashing in his eyes: both meeting as he intercepted one of her missions, realizing as he held her hostage for the Imperials that the Rebels weren't the ones in the wrong, leaving his life as a Stormtrooper to fight alongside her, getting married the day after the battle on Endor. Damien tried to keep his voice from shaking. Saying 'I love you' hurt too much. "Tell Despina that Daddy loves her so much... and one day he'll see her again."
"Please, no-" Artemis tried to stop him, tears brewing in her eyes, but he slipped out the door before her plea was fully formed. It was the sound of his weapon firing that caused her to move again, briskly walking to the back room of the hut where a young couple had carefully hidden themselves. Don't let your emotions show. Don't let them take over. Not now. "We have to go," she told them stiffly. The husband popped up first and helped his wife up, both looking to the older woman for instructions. "Damien's bought us time, but it won't last for much longer."
