The flight to Jakku was quiet, a normal occurrence for me. Normally the X-Wing cockpit wasn't so cramped with spare clothes tucked under my seat, but now I had a droid to watch over. I could hear BD-1 somewhere by my shoes, his spotlight on as he explored the exposed wires in the small area.
"You aren't gonna find anything," I couldn't help but sigh. The BD unit gave a whistling sigh of his own before climbing up my leg and finding a place to sit on my dash, staring at me silently. "So... was Jevo telling the truth about you? Two Jedi masters?" BD-1 chirped twice in agreement. "Wow, then I guess I must be a disappointment."
The droid beeped several times in what sounded like annoyance, stomping his feet similar to earlier. "No, I'm not a Jedi. Never been, never will be. They're overrated- don't give me that look or I'll send you back to Alris, got it?" BD's head drooped after I called him out, and I rolled my eyes as I immediately felt guilty. "Listen, this situation isn't ideal for both of us. I have a wannabe Sith to stop, and you probably want to spend the rest of your days on some peaceful planet." The droid looked up at me curiously. "Am I wrong? I can't hit Hyperdrive anymore without getting noticed by anyone so we have a bit of time... if you want."
BD-1 emitted several beeps and chirps in glee, catching me off guard as it spun around. The droid gave a twitch, and his smaller eye lit up as a blue hologram reflected against the glass topping of the cockpit. It was a recording taken by an older red-headed man, carefully adjusting the recordee before backing up so he could be seen.
"Um, well, hi," he started awkwardly, giving a wave to the camera. "I'm Cal Kestis. If you're receiving this, it means either I died or I passed Bee on to someone else or most likely both."
"Bee?" I repeated, taking a glance at the droid, who was watching the recording intently.
"I don't know how long you've known him, but you're watching this because you're his only hope." The man chuckled to himself, rubbing his face tiredly. "Hope... the galaxy seems to be running out of it. Luke Skywalker disappeared, and now there's word of a new Vader." Ben... "I never had the strength to take him on back then when I was younger, but my time is coming to an end. Might as well try to slow him down. Kriff, I didn't start this to grumble. My life isn't important, but BD-1's is."
If I didn't know any better, I would've thought the droid was crying.
"After I left the Mantis, he was saved my life more times than I can count. He's a fighter, and he enjoys it, but this is a fight he won't get to be apart of. Cordova left him alone praying he would find another Jedi, but I won't do the same. Bee," Cal's voice broke as he prepared his goodbyes, looking down in BD's direction as if he knew where the droid was now. "I can never thank you enough for all that you've done for me. I'd be foolish to tell you to stay out of trouble, so stay out of the really bad trouble. Don't try to avenge me. And to whoever he is with now-" As his eyes passed over to me, I couldn't help but feel nostalgic to the days of a padawan... barely. Something told me he would've been a better master than Luke. "Treat him better than you've treated anyone before; continue his journey along with yours. This is Cal Kestis signing off for the last time."
