Chapter Thirty-eight
Pucha.
Hindi ako makahinga habang tinitingnan siya. I know I should be thinking of ways to get out of here but for some reason, I can't tear my eyes off him.
"K-Kuya JC?" I hear my brother uttered in a small voice, breaking the silence.
Inalis ni JC ang tingin niya sa'kin at ibinaling kay July. "Hi, big boy."
July coiled his weak hand upwards in attempt to do a fistbump while the nurse push his hospital bed. JC met him halfway and lightly smash his hand onto my brother's. Nahuli niya akong nanonood sa kanila kaya agad kong tumingin sa harap.
Some nurses enter before me when it was my turn to enter the elevator. Making it full. Napabuntonghininga na lang ako sa disappointment. Chance ko na sana para makaalis sa sitwasyon na'to.
I moved back and awkwardly stood there with Trevor and JC on my both sides. I never knew that this day would come. Bakit ba ako na-stuck sa dalawang taong ayaw kong makita?
Shet naman. Ang tagal pa umandar ng elevator!
I immediately fished out my earphones on my fear that they might speak. Muntikan pa nga mahulog dahil sa pagpa-panic ko.
The elevator ride took longer than I thought when we got in. Sa fourth floor lang naman kami galing pero ba't ang tagal tagal.
Pagkalapag namin sa ground floor, walang sabi sabi akong lumabas. Tumakbo ako nang makitang sumasakay na sila mama sa ambulance. "Ma, wait lang!"
Nabitin ang pagsakay ni papa dahil sa pagtawag ko. Bumaba siya at humarap sa'kin. "Dalawa lang daw pwede sa loob, 'nak."
In alarm, my eyes went round as I reach for him. "Huh? Bakit daw?" I said in an obviously higher than usual tone.
Hala tang ina naman. Ayokong maiwang mag-isa sa kanila. Willing akong sumiksik kahit doon sa pinakadulo. Maliit lang naman ako kaya baka kasya pa. Kahit saan papatusin ko na.
"Policy daw nila," papa casually answered. Lumagpas ang tingin niya sa'kin at nakita kung sino ang mga nasa likod ko. I blocked his sight and tried my very best to convince him using my eyes.
"Sige na, una na kami," he said instead of what I expected. "Mag-ingat kayo papunta." Kinawayan muna kami ni mama sa loob bago isarado ang pinto.
I hopelessly stare at the ambulance as it drove away from us. Huminga ako nang malalim at hinarap silang dalawa.
As much as I wanna ignore them throughout the day, I knew they deserve a bit of explanation. Nag-effort silang pumunta dito para sa kapatid ko so I owe them at least an introductory.
