As we reached the edge of the park I noticed Zarc running in a different direction. It's so odd to think that the wolf that protected and fought for me, would leave so easily. Not to mention, what the hell! He used to be a human, but the split personality caused him to be a dog while the other becomes a freaking dragon!? Theres got to be another reason for that, but I guess he didn't think we wanted to know. You can't just tell someone you used to be human when you look like a dog and expect them not to be curious!
"U-um.. Phantom?" Yuya stuttered.
I stopped as we came into an alleyway.
"Yes?" I asked.
"Are you sure we're allowed to do this? There's not some kind of rule that forbids this?" he asked, catching the small amount of breath he'd lost as we'd ran here.
"Sure, let's go with that." I responded, turning my attention to the ladder attached to the brick wall.
A small padlock had been placed on the rail slider, preventing it from sliding down. It was a bit too high for me or Yuya to reach...
"Gonzaki!" Yuya said happily.
I turned to see the man from before. He was with Yuzu the last time I saw him, and things hadn't left on a good note...
"Don't let one little frown in a sea of smiling faces bring you down, Phantom!" Yuya said to me as he caught my thoughts.
He ran over to the man who locked eyes with me as soon as I saw him. He stepped into the ally and loomed over me. I adjusted my stance for a fight, ready to either knock him out or run past him and make a break for it. Since Yuya was on the other side, I could easily grab him as I ran so as to not leave him behind.
His eyes were stern and unreadable. He leaned forward and looked at me face to face. It seemed like an eternity passed before anything happened. Suddenly, he let out a heart laugh before looking back at Yuya. I immediately used my surroundings to my advantage. I jumped onto one of the walls and then kicked off to the other, landing smoothly on the other side of him. I'd be damned if I let him do anything to Yuya, at least I know I could handle myself if things went south, but I'm not sure if Yuya could.
Both him and Yuya stared wide-eyed at me as I placed myself between the two. Yuya poked his head out from behind me a bit confused.
"Phantom, chill, he's not gonna hurt me or you, so just calm down." Yuya said with a slight giggle; does this little shit find this funny?
"Yes, yes I do." I'm done...
"Do you know this guy?" I asked already knowing the answer, but wanting to make sure anyway.
"I did say his name when I saw him, I thought that'd give it away?" Yuya replied, walking over to the other male.
"This is Gonzaki Noburu, a close friend. We've known each other since we were kids!" He said happily.
I'd probably be a bit more annoyed, but who can be mad when he shines that 100 watt smile...?
"I heard that!" Yuya yelled, a bit flustered from the oddly timed compliment.
I couldn't hold back my smirk.
"Maybe you were meant to~." I teased with a smirk, shrugging nonchalantly.
This only made him pout and turn to a very confused gonza-whatever-his-name-was.
"Have you met Phantom before?" Yuya asked.
"I believe so, last night. Where's that dog of yours?" he asked plainly.
"Gone." I stated bluntly, talk about an emotionless fellow.
'Phantom!' Yuya chastised, sending me a slight glare.
I sighed once more for what seemed like the hundredth time today.
"You did?" Yuya said, continuing the conversation like nothing had happened.
The large fellow nodded.
"Though he ran off before we could talk to him. I thought he was you at the time, but... why do you two look so alike? Even more so than with your counterparts?"
I leaned on the bricks beside me, thinking about how he might see us right now. Immediately, an image of a dark, gloomy aura around me and a sparkly and bright one around Yuya infiltrated my mind. Not exactly the image I was trying to make, not even the right right concept.
Yuya giggled, he must have seen the image I created. Oh right, we better go... now for the ladder.
"Yuya?" Gonzaki asked.
Yuya snapped out of his thoughts, turning to him.
Oh, sorry, it's a bit hard to explain, but after we do something, I'll try my best to explain everything." He said, holding up his index finger as he spoke.
"Gonzaki is it?" I said grabbing his attention.
He nodded.
"Could you get that ladder down for us?"I asked, pointing to it above his head.
He looked to the ladder and then back to me.
"Don't ask..."
"It has a lock on it." He said bluntly; yeah, no shit.
"Thanks, but that's not an issue. If you don't want to, or can't break the lock, could you give me a boost? I added.
He nodded slowly, looking to Yuya for an answer. None came, he seemed to be focused on the lock rather than what Gonzaki was looking at.
He got down on one knee and cupped his hands.
I reached into my pocket and found my spare paperclip I had been saving in case Reiji locked me up in something I could pick open. I stepped into the open hand and was lifted into the air. To no surprise of my own, I clicked the lock open and unlatched it from the ladder. It made a loud clatter as it pounded into the ground below. Lifting one leg to the wall, I kicked off, doing a backflip, landing gracefully on the pavement.
"What was that for?" Yuya asked.
'Just felt like being a bit of a show off, you know how it feels, don't ya'?' he pouted at that, going quiet for a bit.
Gonzaki shook his hands and stood, stepping away from the ladder. I gestured to Yuya that the ladder was all his. He bounded up to it and pressed a foot into the first step, then stopping, turning to Gonzaki.
"We'll have quite the story the next time I see you!" He said smiling.
Nobaru nodded and Yuya climbed to the top. I followed. Gonzaki placed a hand on my shoulder as I took my first step.
"I don't know what you and Yuya may be up to, but will you make sure to keep him safe for me?" a worried expression etched into his features.
I think this is the first time I've seen an emotion on this guy's face! I nodded, climbing to the roof as well. As I looked back, the man was slowly walking out of the alley, into the park. The sun was starting to come back up, and the soft colors were beginning to spill onto his white jacket as he walked.
