Days turned to weeks. Now with Nadia gone, I had the sole responsibility of the branch's finance. A couple of my besties, Ramona Sullivan and Dakota Ulrich, paid me a surprise visit at the end of the month. Thankfully, on the day they visited me, we had a network outage and all the systems were down. Which basically meant, I had quality time to spend with them. To see those familiar faces after months! That feeling was inexplicable! Dakota had come to Cal city from Casper, Wyoming after almost a year. It will always be one of the fondest memories of my work life.
Rafael and I had become good mates. And I also secretly had a crush on him. I even introduced him to Dakota and Ramona. We were having a chat outside the building, near the parking lot. We had so many things to catch up on. Rafael being one of them. Some of the guys from the neighbouring offices walked past us and looked at us as though, we were inmates who had escaped from Arkham Asylum. We laughed like crazy and our words always had double meaning. What seems normal to outsiders always had a secret meaning that only we understood.
When Rafael stepped out, we burst into giggles. We were talking about him. Ramona kept creeping past a car to catch glimpses of him. And wanted to start calling him to us and I basically had to cup her mouth, even gag her at times and prevent her from screaming his name. It would turn from a fight of power to a fight of inapproriate groping each other. In public mind you! Each of us would quickly push the other's hands and look around hoping that no one saw us engaging in that "cat fight". And we'd burst into laughter once again. Unfortunately, that day came to an end.
The following week, we got a new member joining our team. Susan Lee. Since she didn't have a cubicle of her own, Kaden suggested she move into my cabin temporarily, since I had an empty table. Susan was Rafael's replacement. I was alone in my large cabin for almost 3 weeks. I missed Nadia the most. We had become friends and also, I still had so many doubts which she could only clear. So when Kaden suggested she move into my cabin, I was finally happy to have a neighbor.
She was almost my age. So imagine what'd happen when two girls get together. We'd chat and chat for the whole day. We'd play stupid games the whole day in my cabin. No one would know what was happening with these two crazy girls inside the cabin. But she also spent half her time outside the cabin, with Rafael. The three of us had really good time, especially during our lunch breaks. And naturally, the "others" didn't like the idea of us spending too much time, which could be used to "improve the business".
Kaden came to us one day and told that the three of us must avoid going for lunch together.
"We usually have some important transactions that will have to be processed at the time when Angelica is on her lunch break. With Angelica gone, Rafael, you must take care of that work till she returns. And you, Susan, will be taking over Rafael's work at that time. So, I need any two of you to be available at all times here in the cabin." Kaden finished his speech with a cross look. The three of us, pissed at him look at each other in disappointment.

That evening, while we closed the branch and we heading out in the parking lot, Kaden comes up to me and says "Angelica, your lunch breaks are becoming longer when you go with them. It's not a good sign."
"What in the world is wrong with him?" I silently thought.
You see, there are 3 kinds of workers in my office (in any office for that matter). People like myself, Susan, Rafael, Michael Balkan from Sales, and Steven Read our receptionist who take about 30 minutes for their lunch break. Few others like Mr. Morton, Betty and Victor "Captain" Kramer from acquisitions take at least 45 minutes break, each for breakfast and lunch. Then, there is Kaden who finishes his lunch in less than 10 minutes!
"I cannot gobble up food like you, mister. And don't you talk about taking a short break. You finish your lunch in 10 and go out for a smoke for the remaining 20 minutes. So you have no rights to talk about taking a shorter break!". Of course, none of those words left my head.
"You're doing a great job, Angelica. Especially for someone with zero background knowledge. I don't want you going down a wrong path."
And I was left alone with my thoughts, wondering what Kaden had meant by a wrong path. _________________________________________________ Greetings to my readers!
