Chapter 8: The call

I waited eagerly for June 22. That's when Mr. Randy said he'd have my interview with the HR scheduled. I started taking few online classes, watched lecture videos and read a fair amount of all the basic domain knowledge that would be required for my new role, should I get it. After all, I had to make some effort to learn about it, right? I can't just waltz into the HRM's office and play Simon says. I must admit, I did learn a lot about stuff that I had avoided learning at all. I even took few mock tests to check myself. Thus, went most of my hours for the next four days.

The time I didn't spend on my "new skill acquisition", I spent on "knowledge acquisition" from Netflix. I managed to binge watch season 2 of Fargo and complete the same within 3 days. I never thought I'd hate Kristen Dunst this much. And her character's annoying personality made me want to punch her in the goddamn face. So, you can imagine what I'd have done to my poor pillow.

Come 22 of June, I kept my phone near me at all times. Constantly checking for messages, emails etc. But, nothing. Nada. The entire day had passed. That weekend had also passed. The next weekend came and went by. Not a word was said. I realized that I had totally fucked it up. First impression is the best impression, after all.

"Damn girl, that was some major fuck up in an interview." was my first thought. "Even Penny's (yes, the Penny, our Penny from The Big Bang Theory) disastrous interview at the Pharmaceutical company for the role of Sales Rep. some how landed her a job. (Though, it was the fear of Bernadette biting the HRs head off, if Penny hadn't been hired, was the primary reason.) But still, what happened to me was not that disastrous. Right? Nevertheless, I was disappointed.

Two weeks later, I got a call from a Alex Parrish (no, it wasn't Priyanka Chopra folks. Nor, was I being recruited by the FBI, in case you were wondering.) Remember the other role I was interested in? Well, it was regarding an interview with the Operations Head of that team. It was around 12 noon that I got the call. They expected me to meet the OH for the interview by 5 that evening.

What were they thinking? I had to drive from Cal city to Malibu. It'd take at least 2 hours without traffic. So I decided to grab lunch as I drove to Malibu. I stopped at Carl's Jr in Mojave for lunch. I grabbed a mouthwatering spicy western bacon cheeseburger with coke. The first bite was heaven. All those flavours and textures exploding in my mouth. As I immersed myself in the burger, I quite lost track of time. I took my time with the burger. I knew I was committing a grave sin. Pushing in about 1000 calories in one meal and washing it down with so much sugar? And I firmly believed Lt. Archie Hicox's (Michael Fassbender's character from one of my all time favorite movies INGLORIOUS BASTARDS) idea of a special place in hell for people who waste good scotch. In my case, it was for people who waste damn good cheeseburgers. So I ensured to finish up to the last bits.

45 minutes later, I was back on track. I finally reached the office at 4.30. I was waiting in the lounge for the OH to come back from his evening coffee break. This time I had double checked myself in the mirror. I wore a neat salmon pink knee length dress, white cut shoes with small heels, a single pearl stud and a thin almost invisible silver bracelet and a watch. And of course, a white jacket!

As a bunch of guys headed back into the office, I braced myself as I was thinking "Please don't fuck this up too."
