I closed the door quickly and Jasper chuckled.
"Bedtime?" He asked.
"I don't know about vampires, but humans need sleep."
I realized how revealing I probably looked in my shorts and tank top. I was suddenly incredibly self aware of my scratches and scars. When I looked into Jasper's eyes the insecure feeling faded out and confidence replaced it.
"Hey, don't go into my head," I said.
He smiled.
"Don't be ashamed of your battle scars."
He got closer to me and ran his fingers over my revealed skin.
"I can't help it."
He stepped back and raised his sleeves. Hundreds of light bite marks littered his arms.
"I figured I'd show you mine," he said.
I took his arm in my hands and looked at the bite marks, they were really hard to see, but we're there.
"What happened to you?" I asked looking into to his eyes searching for an answer.
He looked at me longingly.
"I'll tell you another time. You need sleep."
He grabbed my hand and led me to my bed. I laid down and he sat up next to me. I laid my head on his chest slowly allowing him to adjust. His fingers ran through my hair.
"Close your eyes," he said.
I obeyed and closed my eyes.
"Now go to sleep Ophelia."
-
I woke up in the middle of the night, Jasper was gone. Makes sense, if vampires don't sleep, I wouldn't stay either. I laid back down, my bed a little too empty.
-
I woke up to my alarm going off. I did my morning routine and went downstairs. My mom wasn't here. There was a note on the counter.
"Had to leave early, love you lots. Will be home around 7 or 8, going to Charlie's after work. -Mom"
I crumbled up the note and threw it away. I left the house and drove to school. I hurried over to Bella and her friend group.
"Hey, good morning," Bella greeted.
"Morning," I said.
"Did you guys hear, Mr. Hank never showed up at home last night, his wife is filing him missing," Mike said.
"Really?" Angela asked.
Bella nodded.
"My dad's on the case, they think he skipped town with a woman."
"Gross," Jessica said.
"Yeah, gross. He gave me detention yesterday but when I got to his classroom he wasn't there so I left."
"Weird," Eric said.
I nodded.
"He was kind of creepy though, I'm glad he's gone," I said.
"Yeah, I heard he tried to get with a student once. She kicked him in the nuts though and he never talked to her again," Jessica said.
"Good thing he's gone," Bella said.
The bell rang and we all hurried to class. I got into my art class and Jasper and Alice sat on either side of me. I remembered Jessica saying they were together. Were they together? Was Jasper leading me on? He didn't say anything about them yesterday. I immediately got saddened. I continued painting, not letting it affect me. I looked up feeling eyes drill into me. Jasper was looking at me confused. I forgot he could tell my emotions. I looked back at my painting before he could persuade my mood and let myself get lost in my work.
When the bell rang, I hurriedly walked out of the classroom. I was stopped by Alice.
"Hey, do you want to come over tonight? I've been wanting to give you a makeover. I've got a bunch of gloves I think you'll like," she asked.
"Uhm, I'm not sure, my mom won't be home and I was going to facetime my friend."
"Pleeeeease."
I thought about going to the vampire's home. I didn't know if they'd be aggressive. The thought scared me. I trusted Jasper, but I didn't really know about anyone else.
"I'll think about it," I said.
She smiled and walked off. I hurried out of the door and Jasper stopped me.
"What's wrong?" He asked me.
"Um, nothing, I'm fine," I lied.
"Why are you upset?"
"Jasper, just please, believe that I'm fine."
He grabbed my hand.
"Talk to me."
I pulled my hand out of his. I scratched at my glove. I walked away wanting to just disappear. What was I supposed to say? Hey, Jasper, Vampire guy, are you dating your sister? No, I'm not being the weird one again. I went to my class and tried to forget about it all.
-
At lunch I went straight to Bella's table. Everyone watched me sit down.
"Hey," I greeted.
"Hey, we're going dress shopping tonight, do you wanna join?" Bella asked.
"Dress shopping?" I asked confusing.
"Prom," Angela said.
"I... I have plans that weekend."
"Yeah Bella does too, but I want your opinion on my dress," Angela said.
"Yeah, we need both of your opinions," Jessica said.
"I guess, yeah."
"Ok, Angela's driving," Jessica said quickly.
"No fair!"
"I drove last time, you're driving this time," Jessica argued.
"No, Eric drove last time."
"Well, it's your turn."
I laughed at the sisterly fighting happening in front of me. I remembered Alice's proposal. I didn't feel like third wheeling between Alice and Jasper. I turned to see Edward looking at me chuckling. I looked to Jasper and he was looking at me seemingly amused. I looked back to my table quickly. I smiled and turned my attention back to the group in front of me.
When lunch was over I headed to my history class. Jasper caught up with me.
"Hey, let me walk with you," He said.
I nodded and he took my arm. He wrapped it around his and I smiled. He stiffened a bit, but quickly adjusted. He smiled to me and we walked to the history room. I got anxious as we got close to the door, thinking about what happened yesterday.
-
After school Bella offered to pick me up and they'd meet up at her house to go.
"Uh yeah, sure sounds good."
"Okay, I'll pick you up in like an hour."
"Okay see you then."
Jasper waited for me at my car. As I walked up I noticed him.
"Alice made me come to see if you were coming over."
"Actually I have plans, I'm going with Bella and the girls to Port Angeles to look at prom dresses."
"Who are you going to prom with?"
"Um, I'm not, they want to go to help pick out dresses for them, Bella and I will just be there to help."
"Oh, okay. I'll let Alice know."
"Thank you."
