I gasped at the white haired girl floating in front of me like a ghost. Despite the tense atmosphere, Nan wore an amused expression.
I looked at Jade, bracing her for surprised outburst, but she didn't seem to notice the frivolous demon twirling around in the air. Nan grinned down at me.
There we go. You monster! That's the phrase I've been waiting for.
"Could you shut up?" I snapped. "What are you playing at here?"
Nan laughed. I'm just here to watch the fun. Stop being so pessimistic.
"Who are you talking to?" Jade looked around fervently.
"No one," I quickly said. "Just talking to myself."
Nan edged closer to Jade and circled around her, scanning her up and down. Oh. Her soul looks quite tasty. Look at the despair and anger in there.
"Nan," I hissed. "Stop it."
Nan grinned at me and playfully reached out a hand towards Jade like she was going to wrap her arm around her neck. I sprang forward and tried to grab Nan, but my hand passed through her arm like she wasn't there.
Laughing in delight, Nan flew behind me. I turned around and glared at her, trying to come up with a way to get her out of her ghost form. Nan continued grinning down at me with a mocking light in her eyes when her eyes suddenly glanced over my shoulders and her smile dropped.
Behind.
I didn't have to turn to see what Nan meant. It was as if I could suddenly see through her eyes.
I stepped to the side and watched a blade swipe through the air where my back would've been if I hadn't moved. Quickly, I stuck my foot out and kicked Jade off balance. She landed on her face, and I bent down to wrench the weapon out of her hands.
Through the composed mask I had barely managed to keep on, my heart was hammering like crazy. If Nan hadn't warned me about Jade, I probably would've been stabbed by her.
Wincing, Jade turned over as a stream of blood ran down her nose. Anger boiled within me after the shock had died down, and I shouted, "Are you crazy? Are you really going to dirty your hands like this?"
"You..." Jade's unfocused eyes turned furious as she sat up. "You don't get it!"
I recognized the desperation and rage in Jade's eyes. It was the same as the one I had when I saw Guren the first time after leaving May. A crazed feeling where all you wanted to do was get revenge on the person who hurt you.
If it weren't for Justin and the others, I probably would've ended up seriously hurt or even worse, dead because when I was in that mindset, the last thing I was thinking about were the serious repercussions that followed.
When I was that blinded by emotions, I couldn't think rationally. I could only relax if I saw Guren in pain by my hands.
"How could you?" her voice broke, snapping me out of my thoughts. "I trusted you. P—Petal trusted you. Yet you bring those people into this town...no you are one of those people. Now, you're trying to lecture me to not dirty my hands? Just think about how many people you've killed!"
Her scream echoed in the lonely street and amplified tenfold in my head. I could see Nan floating silently besides me in the corner of my eye, waiting for my response.
I sighed and glanced down at the weapon in my hands. My red eyes flashed in the reflection of the dagger, and I tightened my grip on the weapon. A loud clink rang through the air before the dagger shattered all together and fell through my fingers in small pieces.
