"Hello?"
"Hi."
"Who is it?"
I gasped and feigned being hurt. "You didn't save it."
I heard Cara chuckle and some ruffling. "Nope. What's up? Is something wrong?" A loud cry could be perceived from the distance. "Darn, not again, no." She mumbled.
"Cara!" A woman yelled.
Wow, that house was loud.
"No. Everything's fine. Just wanted to talk to you." I muttered.
"Oh." She let out a breath as the child continued crying in the background.
"Cara!"
"I- I need to go."
She hung up. This couldn't be happening. Why was I keeping up with this? She was the most unreachable girl in the whole fucking world. I hadn't crossed more than twenty words at a time with her. It was impossible.
My phone buzzed.
Sorry oue of the tiwns is crying
I stopped reading the text and frowned. I glanced at Luca beside me in the dining room table as he worked on his computer. Confused of my own knowledge in English, I asked. "How do you spell twins?" I think that's what she wanted to say.
"Why? Did Ace say something?"
I cocked my head. Ace?
"Forget it. T-w-" he stopped and took a paper and a pen. "Wait, I'm not good at spelling, I need to write it." He chuckled and wrote it down. "Twins."
I pursed my lips and stared at the text. Maybe my suspicions were true. When she had to fill in the documents the other day, she asked me to do it for her, she blamed it on being nervous, but I saw how she wrote her last name before she handed me the pen. Belinsky. The e was written backwards, I thought it was cute and done on purpose, I don't know, like how people would put little hearts on top of their i's.
But maybe she was dyslexic.
I didn't know much about it, so I started to look for some information. Before I dug into it, I replied to her test.
don't worry. can I call you back later?
She read it and replied after five minutes.
:)
I took that as a yes, and as a little bit more of confirmation towards my suspicions.
I opened my laptop that was also on the table -I was supposed to be editing some photos for a magazine- and started my research.
As I supposed, dyslexic people do not only make typos, but they also turn upside down or backwards some letters. They have difficulties reading, writing and spelling.
I rested my chin on my hand. That would explain many things, but what about her nervousness? She always seemed distracted, she also struggled to understand things when someone was explaining something to her. It's like she wasn't listening, not because she didn't want to, but because her mind flew somewhere else.
I sighed and closed my laptop. It wasn't my place to research all this information. If Cara wanted to tell me, she would. She would not make the excuse that she didn't like to text. I knew she was quite special, and that only intrigued me more.
"Are you okay?" Luca glanced at me under his glasses. I nodded and gave him a tired smile. "Wanna go for a walk?"
I raised an eyebrow. He walked as if he was in a race. So fast and gracious. I limped. I couldn't walk as fast as him, plus, it wasn't something I enjoyed. It hurt after a while.
