Feel free to replace Spirit with yourself or your OC!

Spirit walked along the cold cave. She held her nail close and tight. "Weird..." She mumbled, eying the cage-like substance. Spirit was exploring Howling Cliffs when she found a secret cave, and she couldn't resist going in! "Agrrah-what." She yelped. "Stupid bug corpse..." Spirit whispered. Of course, curiosity killed the cat...Spirit stared at it, wondering what it was doing here. She carefully pulled out her dream nail and struck it. Red sparks flew everywhere and she let out a cry of pain as something shock through her. "Gah...what the-huh." She said, getting up. Nothing happened. Spirit sighed as she began to walk out. But then she noticed that the cage thing was glowing! She smirked and drew her nail. Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! She hit it four times and then all of the flames lit around her, causing Spirit to tumble back, yelping. Odd music was heard from above along with loud footsteps. "Woah..." She breathed. Spirit decided that it was best to get the heck outta there, so she s p r I n t e d out of Howling Cliffs and dashed back to Dirthmouth, meeting a scared Elderbug and eerie red tents.

"Spirit! While you were gone, these odd tents made their way here! Has something happened? No, don't tell me. I think it's best not to go near them. They give off a strange vibe." Elderbug said, trembling. Spirit gulped. "Heh. You know me though...." She said, stepping towards the tent. Elderbug sighed. "Hmm. Just be careful, will you?" He asked. Spirit nodded. "I've been though worse."

Spirit stepped into a tent. The bigger one. There was a bug playing an accordion. Spirit, being the social-awkward person she was, politely walked right pass. She walked into a big red area where red spotlights flew around her and p u f f. There was a tall creature with black horns and a dark blue cloak. "So...it was you who called us. Well met my friend, well met. I am Grimm. Master of this troupe..."

*time skip to after Spirit fought Grimm*

Both figures were panting for air as their dance ended. Spirit had her nail half drawn and her hair was twisted and tangled and Grimm's cloak had small holes in them. "Well done~" He whispered. Grimm then snapped his fingers, causing Grimmchild to grow a bit. "Look how our child has grown, nourished and straightened by the heat of our passionate dance. Go and collect the remaining flames and return to me." He explained. Before Spirit could speak, he was gone in a puff of scarlet smoke. She sighed and took the child to do another fetch quest.

*another time skip O-o*

She returned with the Grimmchild by her side, ready to fight Grimm again. Though the bug who was p,aging the accordion was gone.....pah. As Spirit walked to the main area, Grimm wan't there. The path beyond was open, though. Spirit shrugged. "Well...c'mon Grimmchild." She whispered. Spirit walked in the dimly lit hall until she saw....Grimm?! And he was sleeping upside down. Spirit held back a snicker as she stepped in the little stool-thing. She looked over to Grimmchild who was singling something......."You...want me to dream nail him?" Spirit asked, pulling it out. Grimmchild let out a, "Mmmmmrow!" As a response. Spirit laughed. "Alrighty." And she hit him with it, causing her vision to blur.

Spirit yelled as she was thrown onto the floor. "Ow...woah." She said, getting up and brushing herself off. "Where did Grimmchild go to..." Spirit wondered aloud. She shrugged it off and walked down the hall. There was a faint beating of a heart and got louder, and louder, and louder, until she reached a big room, a door shutting behind her. A figure suddenly appeared! "Grimm?..." She whispered. But no. It was slightly taller and had a red clock and horns. He immediately began to attack. "Watch it!" She yelled as he sent fire bats her way. Spirit raised her nail out preparing to strike, when hands grabbed her from behind. "My, my. What has Grimm sent this time?..." A silky voice said. Spirit pried his arms off and turned around, nail in hand. "...what do you mean....?" She asked, stepping back. NKG sighed. "Where are my manners. I'm the Nightmare King." He said, bowing. Something about his presence made Spirit feel...safe. Though she didn't know why. "Hm. My name is Spirit." She replied. Nightmare King smiled. "Pretty name for a pretty girl." He thought. "Hold up." Spirit said, putting away her nail. "Why did you stop fighting me?" She asked. NKG's face went blank. "Uh...I really don't know why. I guess after being alone for so long, some presence felt nice. I don't want to attack you, Spirit." He explained. Spirit looked away and nodded.

"Okay?...so. How do I get out of here?..." Spirit asked. "Leave? No." NKG thought. "Uh. I have to kill you or you kill me." He said as blandly as she could. She looked up at him. "What? I'm not going to do that. You seem...like a good person." She whispered. NKG blushed lightly. "I mean...you could stay!" He said. Spirit smiled. "I would like that."

*Time skip to four months laterrrrr*

Long, long, long story short, Sprit and NKG got into a relationship. NKG confessed his feelings to Spirit a month later, and she immediately returned it. They were very happy. Very. NKG grew overprotective of her. Though really nothing could harm them-they were in the Nightmare Realm. Nothing could harm them!...except the ritual. When the ritual wasn't completed, Grimm decided to wait for another lantern call. And it did happen! Sooner than you would think. Turns out a little vessel called them. (Not Ghost) They completed the ritual. Yes. When they came to fight NKG, NKG didn't. Not when he had everything he wanted! The vessel grew annoyed and tried to kill Spirit! NKG being himself, killed the vessel short after, sending them back to the regular world. That vessel didn't stop though. They came back over, and over, and over again. Spirit was normally the one to 'greet' them first. But thanks to the vessel's size, they would easily slip past her view. Unfortunately, they managed to catch NKG off guard. And defeated him. Spirit was sobbing as she was sent back to the real world. "I'm gonna call them. Then nothing can separate us! Except for Grimm..." She thought in anger. So for the next six months, she searched for another lantern. Somewhere far. "Stupid lantern...where is it?!" She yelled. No lantern could be found. As the infection spread, Spirit lost hope and fled, heartbroken.

Nightmare King, however, knew what had happened. His sorrow quickly turned into anger. "I swear to the flame, Grimm. If you ever find a lover, I'm going to take her. No matter what." He said through gritted teeth. "Spirit...please return one day..."

Hi. Sorry if this was a bit rushed! I just wanted to make a backstory for Nightmare King so there would be a cool explanation for why he was being such a butt. And yes. If you read Chapter 46, you'll know that he set Y/N free because he knew that Spirit had returned. Cute, right? Hope you enjoyed!
