«Makoto Naegi»
The sky is a stormy grey as we walk to Sayaka's house. I feel disconnected from my body, watching my wobbly form stagger across the pavement, but not feeling the impact of the plodding steps. I can't believe Sayaka would do something like this... she... I...
Byakuya knocks on the door. Beside him, a speaker crackles to life with a tinkling melody accompanied with Sayaka's voice.
"Hello, welcome to the home of the greatest girl band ever!" She giggles.
"Sayaka, we need to talk to you!" I yell through the speaker. My words are drowned out by a thick film of static.
"Come in!" She laughs.
Her tinkling laugh chases us up the driveway. I watch Byakuya's legs shake as we pummel up the driveway. It feels like a funeral procession.
"What do we do when we find her?" I whisper.
"We stop her." He answers coldly.
The door creaks open.
I stiffen, bracing to see Sayaka.
But Yukiko, Sayaka's bandmate, stands there instead.
I've never really been this close to her- Sayaka is always at the front of the band, the favourite. She has glossy blue hair in a jagged cut, shiny skin and misty black eyes which swirl dizzily. She looks unreal, her features distorted like a barbie doll.
"Hello!" She smiles.
"Hi-"
"We're looking for Sayaka." Byakuya declares.
"She's downstairs, in the pool." Yukiko beams a smile full of perfect pearl teeth. "Follow me!"
We follow her down the steps, into the basement. The floor is pearly white tiles, the walls painted pale blue. A glittering pool shimmers in the middle of the room, blue as an ocean but as calm as a lake. It's like a perfect idea of a swimming pool- except, Sayaka isn't here.
"I know why your here."
I turn around. Yukiko smiles at us, her eyes still twinkling but hardened to gleaming onyx, infinitely more beautiful but infinitely more deadly.
"You think she's the mastermind, don't you." She whispers. "You're wrong."
"Because I am the mastermind." She holds up a tiny vial. "And I have the cure."
"No." I hear Byakuya whisper.
"Yes I am. I helped Junko to spread her despair across the world. And I can't wait to do it again!"
"Why?!" I splutter. I feel myself slipping away, flailing for something to grab. Byakuya seizes my hand.
"I wanted revenge. On who? Everybody." Yukiko's face remains in a grin as she paces the poolside.
"Did you know, we were originally never a band. We all tried to get signed individually, but we were shoved together as a girl band. We thought the attention would fizzle out after a month- but no, and now we're the biggest girl band in Japan, even the world."
"Sayaka was always the favourite. I was always at the back, her shadow. I was always compared to her. I was a copy, and the public ignored me."
"I helped Junko to give them that despair back. Oh, how horrid they'll feel when their favourite girl band turns on them!"
"You're crazy." Snorts Byakuya. "Just give us the cure."
"Yukiko, please, there must be a better way!" I yell.
"I don't care. You're not getting the cure. Anyway, Byakuya doesn't have long left."
At those words, Byakuya falls to the ground, clutching his stomach.
"Byakuya! BYAKUYA!" I shake his shoulder, kissing his scrunched up face.
"Haha! Oh, you know I haven't cried since I started this band." Yukiko laugh, tears rolling down her face.
"I love you Makoto." Byakuya chokes out.
"Don't leave me!" I cry, as Yukiko laughs and laughs and cries and cries.
