4 months later
"Sergeant, a word in your office." Commander Fischer tells Hank, who has just arrived in the empty bullpen only to find the Commander standing outside of his office.
Hank follows Fischer into the office, closing the door behind him before facing his superior.
"I'm putting one of yours undercover for a week." Fischer tells him once both men are facing each other.
Hank nods. "Alright, I'll let Antonio know." He assures the Commander.
Fischer shakes his head a little while saying, "I'm putting a face in Narcotics that they haven't seen before, ever."
Time seems to slow down as Voight feels his heart sink to his stomach like a brick. He knows there is only one person on his team who the other unit has never laid eyes on.
"I've assigned Detective Rodriguez to this case. Four of the Narcotics members are stealing money from busts that deal with the more high-end drugs. The numbers aren't adding up. I need her to be their sniper for a week, report what the numbers are, and how much actually gets turned in. She'll get her pay from our district and a check each day of the week from the Narcotics Commander. He and I have already spoken, and he'll be the one to introduce her to his team, which is ran by Sean Howard." Fischer explains to Voight, who quickly shakes his head.
"With all due respect, Commander, Narcotics is ruthless." Hank asks, not wanting Danielle anywhere near Sean Howard.
"I'm well aware of that, Sergeant, but I've already signed off on having her there for the week. She starts tomorrow and will be back under your authority by next Wednesday, possibly sooner if everything goes smoothly. When she arrives, please call me." Fischer orders.
Once his superior is gone, Hank stays standing there in the middle of his office. Slowly, he runs one hand over his face. He's not ready to tell her. Not when she has been opening up to him and Al these past few months. Not when Voight had invited her to have dinner with him a few weeks ago, just them, and she said yes without hesitation.
"We've only got this slice left. Sorry about that." The waitress kindly apologized before leaving their table to greet some other customers as they entered the restaurant.
Hank looked at Danielle, who glanced at him as the slice of apple pie sat in the middle of the table. He knew that she was planning to not eat any, that way he could have it, but he wanted her to have some. Even if the situation only fueled his, indescribable, feelings towards her.
"Well, I don't know about you, but I can't let a good slice of pie ever go to waste." He spoke, watching as she smiled slightly at him.
He handed her one fork before he held the second one, purposely allowing her to take the first bit of their dessert. He watched her shyly cut a piece off before lifting the fork to her lips. As she chewed, he took a small forkful of the pie before he put the fork to his lips. The happy little hum that he heard from her caused him to look at her again, finding her smiling to herself. The noise caused his cheeks to grow warm after he realized just how comfortable she is in his presence. As they got back to talking about that day's case, the slice of pie quickly became only a tiny corner. Neither had paid attention to how rapidly the slice had gotten eaten until their forks softly clinked together.
"Oh." She had nervously giggled as she quickly pulled her fork away.
He saw a light shade of pink spread across her face while she set her fork down on a clean napkin. The sight had sent his heart racing for another time that evening.
"Here." He spoke while cutting the small piece in half as best as he could.
"Thank you." She said with a shy smile.
