The buzzing of my phone jolts me awake, and with my eyes still filled with sleep, I hurriedly look for my phone.

"Hello?" I ask into the device after answering the call.

"Morning, Hank."

Trudy's voice greets me on the other end of the phone. I rub my eyes with my right hand, saying,

"Morning. How did it go?"

"Good, finally detained the suspect about half an hour ago. We're just finishing up paperwork then we'll be heading to the station. How is she?"

I'm barely realizing I fell asleep on the couch as I turn my head to look at Danielle. I find her already looking at me, seeming a bit bored.

"She's up." I answer.

"Alright, I stopped by the house last night after our suspect demanded food. I left her a spare key in our usual spot. She knows where to find it. Do you mind taking her to the house and to work?"

"You're not leaving me much of a choice here." I answer, watching Danielle blush the slightest bit as she looks away from me.

I didn't mean to sound rude, and she probably feels embarrassed now about being an inconvenience, which she isn't being. I'll do anything for Trudy since she and I go way back. Besides, it gives me a chance to figure out if this girl will truly be a good asset to my team.

"I owe you, I get it. But thank you. Oh, gotta go."

The call abruptly drops, leaving me to sigh as I read a few missed messages from Platt that were sent two hours ago.

"Good morning." Danielle says softly.

"Morning. How'd you sleep? Have you been up long?" I ask her.

"I slept okay. And not too long. The sun hit my face and I freaked out." She says, slightly clearing her throat.

"Well, I guess you heard what Trudy said. Let me get ready then we'll go to her house." I say, standing from the couch.

"Okay." She softly acknowledges staying in place while getting on her phone as I walk off.

...

Getting out of my car, she casually looks around before going to and opening the mailbox, retrieving a small yellow envelope. Opening it rapidly, she gets a key out then proceeds to go and open the front door while I get out of my car.

"Make yourself comfortable. I won't take long." She tells me as I walk in behind her.

It doesn't take her long to be disappearing down the only hallway in the house. I sit on the smaller couch of the two in the living room, closely looking at pictures on the little coffee table between both couches and a loveseat. Trudy and Danielle are in every picture together, doing something different.

There's one where the two are standing outside somewhere, Danielle holding up a certificate, Trudy with an arm around her shoulders. Another shows the two smiling at the camera, holding up some plates of food at a restaurant.

The smile the young woman has on her face in all of these pictures fascinates me. She looks so different in terms of mood. My phone rings, causing me to take it out of my pocket as I quickly glance at the screen.

"Morning, Al." I answer.

"Morning, Hank. Hey, should I bring donuts today?" He asks.

"Yeah, that'd be good. Been a while since the boys got treated." I answer with a slight laugh.
