It's been weeks since the incident and Laura hadn't seen any twins with the information given to her and her friends. She couldn't help but keep thinking about the man who had dropped her back home on that rainy night. She faintly remembered his name as Seth.
"Laura!" Snapping her head to the side to look at her annoying friend, Mara, Laura scowled.
"Yes?"
"I've been calling your name for the past twenty minutes and you keep zoning out. There's a delivery coming in about..." Mara stared at her watch. "—Five minutes and Ross would like you to be in charge."
Laura jumped out of her seat. "What?! Why didn't you tell me sooner?!"
Mara shrugged. "I tried to..."
"How many?"
"Twins." The two women were now rushing down the hallways, ignoring the looks from other people.
Laura wasn't surprised by the word, already losing hope in finding any twins.
"How much time do we have left until she's ready?"
"Uh, three minutes, forty five seconds."
Laura pulled on a hairnet and a surgical mask.
"Two minutes."
Washing her hands, she pulled on some gloves and rushed out of the dressing room, down the hallway to the receptionist's table, Mara taking the lead.
"I want information on Marian Kingston." The woman behind the table went through the computer on her desk.
"Room number?"
"Yes."
"264."
"Got it."
Rushing down the hallway, the pair took the emergency elevator. Mara putting in the floor number.
Once the pair were on the floor, they ran down the hallways, searching through the door numbers.
"20 seconds, 19, 18, 17, 16..."
Finally, they found the door and they entered. Laura entering first after Mara opened the door to see a heavily pregnant woman trying to take deep breaths as her husband spoke assuring words to her.
"Good evening Ma'am, how are you doing today?" Laura asked with a smile and the brunette managed to nod.
"Okay. I'm Laura and I'll be your delivery nurse today. This is my assistant, Mara. I need you to calm down and take deep breaths. Now widen your legs a little bit...fine. We're going to start right now, okay?"
"Now on the count of three, I want you to push, okay? One, two, three!"
A scream erupted from the woman's lips as she pushed.
Laura there to rub on her legs supportively. "One, two, three!"
"Ahhh!"
"Okay take some deep breaths." Looking at the monitor's screen, Laura turned to smile at the woman and nodded her head. "One, two, three!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Okay, I can see the head of the baby! We're almost there!"
"One, two, three!"
"Ahhhh!"
"Push!"
"Ahhhh!"
"Your baby's almost out. Push!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Wahhhh!" The sound of a baby's cry filled the room as Laura carried the baby and handed it to Mara to clean up.
"Okay, Sir. I need you to come and cut the umbilical cord." The man who's face was contorted with pain gently removed his wife's hand from his and told her he would be right back. Taking the scissors Mara handed him, he followed her instructions and cut where she told him to cut.
"Wow, Ma'am, your other baby's approaching fast! It must be a fighter!" Laura said, looking at the monitor with a smile.
The man held his wife's hand again. "Now, on the count of three, I need you to push."
"One, two, three!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Push!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Push!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Push!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
Laura saw that the woman was on the verge of fainting but assured her with her words. "The head is out!"
"Push!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Push!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Wahhhh!"
The sound of another baby's cry filled the room and the sweaty mother watched as Laura handed the second baby to Mara to clean her up.
Changing her gloves after washing her hands and disposing of the other, Laura was called over by a surprised Mara.
"Laura, I need you to come see this."
Laura walked over to Mara who showed her the elbow of the first girl, then turned it over to see a huge mark that looked like a scar.
"This is a rather strange looking birthmark, don't you think?"
Laura nodded, eyebrows furrowed as Mara showed her another similar looking mark on the the second girl's thigh.
"And what's more scary is when you put it together, it has the face of a monster."
Mara showed her by putting the sleeping girls body parts together, scaring Laura even more.
Laura thought about it and remembered something. Cepos had mentioned that the twins would have something strange about them at the meeting. Mara hadn't been at it so she couldn't possibly know.
"Get the paperwork for the parents to fill and ours too."
Mara left the room to get the paperwork, telling the husband to follow her.
The mother of the baby was sleeping on the bed and the harmless children also slept in the crib. It was the perfect opportunity for Laura to steal the babies and run away, but she couldn't.
The babies were harmless and beautiful, their sleeping mother also looked worn out and exhausted, Laura couldn't find the courage to steal her babies from her. It was simply too cruel to do.
Her hands shook as touched the twin girl's cheeks, she couldn't possibly do this to a human like her. Tears filled her eyes at the imagination of what the mother would go through when she find out her babies were missing, the depression and the traumatic experience.
Laura took a step back, shaking her head. "No. I can't do it."
Just then, Mara entered into the room with the father, she placed her hand on Laura's shoulder with a happy sigh. "Another successful delivery for Laura Sampson and Mara Hill."
Seeing that her friend was not smiling, Mara asked, "Hey, you okay?"
Concern filled her eyes as she patted her friend's shoulder who bit her lip, tears filling her eyes. "Laura, are you okay? You look exhausted."
Laura forced her mouth into a smile that didn't reach her eyes, "I'm fine...just hungry and tired."
Mara nodded her head in understanding. "Yeah, me too..."
"I've filled in all the paperwork and handed it to Ross. Dianna and Terry would handle all the other arrangements. We could take a bath and eat something before heading back home. Sound good?"
Laura nodded.
"Thank Jesus. You look like a zombie from all those crap horror movies."
Laura glared at her friend, resisting the urge to whack her with a stick as she laughed at her own joke and pulled Laura out of the room.
