Yoongi started taking the bus to work. It may seem pointless to an outsider, considering his car is in perfect working condition, but Yoongi noticed that he spent too much on gas money. And he hates sitting in traffic. Now that he lives alone, he had to be a bit more money conscious, so if he can save a little money by taking the bus and avoid having to sit in traffic, then that's exactly what he's going to do.
What surprises him is that he doesn't mind taking the bus. He normally doesn't enjoy having to sit so closely to other people, but the bus ride provides ample inspiration for his music - the people, the scenery. He's written quite a few songs on his ride to work, songs that he can feel proud of. He also finds that if he puts in his headphones, people won't be tempted to strike up a conversation with him, leaving him to his own devices.
He likes the routine of taking the bus to work, and the familiarity that comes with it. He looks forward to sitting in one of the hard plastic/leathery orange seats and getting to take in his surroundings. He's come to recognize a few of the people too. There's always an older gentleman who sits near the front, and always has the paper out in front of him. There's a young girl with bright purple hair and drumsticks that lightly taps on the back of the seat in front of her. Yoongi likes her, even though they've never spoken before. He likes the light rhythm she makes every morning. There's a mother and her four year old son who always look like they're going to some event. Soccer one day, swimming the next, that sort of thing.
He knows that when they pass the rundown gas station that looks like it belongs in a small town and is the only gas station around for miles, that a young boy and his dog will get on. They stay for three stops and get off on the fourth. As soon as they get off, a couple gets on. They look like your typical high school sweethearts. Yoongi can tell they're in love, and every time he sees them he wonders what that would be like. He's never been in love before and none of his previous relationships had ever lasted long enough for him to fall in love. He's envious almost. He wants to know what that's like, to have someone who is not only your best friend but your soulmate or whatever you wanted to call it.
Yoongi feels like he's in an entirely different place when he gets on the bus. The city doesn't feel like a city. Some parts feel and look like a small town where everyone knows each other and there's no secrets amongst them. You can't hide in a town like that. Yoongi plans on exploring these parts when the weather is warmer. He wants to know them like he knows the back of his hand. He wants to discover their secrets and make them his own. And they never feel the same 24/7. Sometimes they feel warm and inviting in the early morning hours; just as the sun is rising over the city, consuming it in an orange glow that lights up the snow if an orange and glittery shimmer. And other times they feel secretive and secluded as the snow swirls all around on the outside of the bus, and the sky is a lovely shade of purple. They're hiding something but Yoongi doesn't know what they're hiding.
And when they cross the bridge that hovers over the bay, and into downtown, Yoongi comes to life. People are bustling about on the sidewalks. Someone is always going somewhere or coming from somewhere, but there's no stopping them. They're people with a mission, a man with a plan, and he wonders where exactly they're hurrying to. He wonders if they ever stop and slow down to take in their surroundings. Or are they endless machines, tirelessly working themselves into a frenzy. Busy bodies who always have to be doing something. This is the part where everything feels alive. There's always something to do, and something to see that you never know where to start. And once you start, there's no stopping, and he wonders if people realize that there's so much to do in the city that it's okay if they take a break - it's not going anywhere, you can come back to tomorrow and start again.
The city is still alive and moving in the evening when he manages to escape the building and hop back on the bus. The night life is just as wild as the early mornings, there's just as much to do at night as there is to do during the day. It makes his head hurt, and he's exhausted just watching them.
He feels better once they reach the bridge, and he can already feel things slowing down. He can see the sunset on the horizon much clearer, and the water lights up with the same colours as the sky, but it glitters much more clearly from this angle. He can breathe easier once they reach the other side, and he's surrounded by the calm life of the neighbourhoods around him. He can see children playing outside their homes in the snow, and maybe one or two people out for a walk. The streetlights are lit but there's nobody outside except for that one group of teens he sees waiting in the parking lot of a gas station. They're there some nights and gone the others. He remembers being that age - and hanging around places like that with Namjoon and Hoseok. Noah only joined when she was bored, and maybe sometimes her friend group would join them and there'd be seven of them hanging out drinking energy drinks, and smoking something they shouldn't be smoking. They know what it's like to just kick back and relax once and awhile.
He begins to recognize the night owls as well. The group of teens that congregate at the back of the bus. They've all got skateboards, and Yoongi couldn't imagine skateboarding in the middle of january, but he's not one to judge, because he's used to doing rap battles outside of underground clubs in freezing weather, and having the time of his life. There's a young couple - college students he guesses - that hop on and get off at the same diner every other night. There's a boy and his grandmother. They're always playing eye spy to pass the time.
By the time he makes it home, he's slowed right down, and feels much better. It's quite as he steps off the bus and makes his way down the sidewalk towards the gas station. It's got one flickering light, and sometimes Yoongi's wonders if a demon is suddenly going to step out from the darkness and under the light. It'll go out and he won't see it coming but the next thing he knows, he's being possessed. He chuckles under his breath.
Holly is waiting for him by the door when he arrives. He's always happy to see him come home, and Yoongi is always happy to curl up on the couch for a few minutes to play tug of war with him, or just cuddle. Life seems pretty simple for him. He'll make dinner for the both of them, and then it's either off to the studio or to bed for him. He feels content though, as he slips under his covers, wondering what sort of adventure tomorrow will bring.
