It was Friday now and the week seemed to have moved slower than a snail stuck in molasses. Zac hadn't been in school but I had seen him everyday after. Dylan started to get suspicious that I was up to no good but I told him that I was just helping Zac catch up with all of the work he was missing, I wasn't completely lying. I had decided I would drive today instead of going for the normal run. Reaching Zac's I noticed Jayden's car in the driveway.
Jayden and I hadn't seen each other since the day he told me there was nothing much he could do for Zac. He would come over to the house during school, probably to avoid something or me. I turned the car off, pulled my jacket on and made my way to the door. I knocked a couple times before Zac's mom, Jennifer, can to answer the door.
"Kylie, its great to see you again honey. Zac and Jayden are in Lily's room." Jennifer was such a sweet woman. Everyday I would come over the house just had a motherly feel to it. She would cook and take care of the house for Zac. She always told me that she had a bad case of empty nest syndrome because Zac left the house so early of age.
Sure enough when I walked into Lily's pink princess room Jayden and Zac were sitting on the floor surrounded by stuffed animals. It was a really funny sight seeing two guys sitting in a pink princess room surrounded by stuffed animals.
"Hey guys!" They both turned their heads towards me and smiled. It was refreshing seeing Zac smiling. "Good news?" I walked over and sat between them with my legs crossed Indian style and looked between the two.
"It's not really good news but its not bad new either." I nodded at Zac as he motioned for Jayden to start explaining.
"Basically Zac could gain full custody of Lily because he has been the one to take care of her since birth, the only thing is that Nikki would get visiting privileges also." I nodded and smiled at Jayden while pulling Zac into a huge hug.
"Well does this mean we get to celebrate?"
"Not just yet. We still have to meet with Nikki. Who should be getting here in a few minutes." It seemed like she had been standing outside with super sonic hearing, listening in to what we were saying because as soon as Jayden finished speaking the doorbell rang and a shiver ran down my back.
"Kylie, can you watch Lily while we go and talk to Nikki?" I nodded and grabbed Lily from Jennifer while she exited the house giving everyone a good luck kiss on the cheek. I stayed in the room with Lily while Zac and Jayden walked out to meet Nikki in the dining room.
It seemed like years had gone by while I sat in the room playing with Lily until I finally heard noises outside. It had been eerily quiet for a while and my curiosity was getting the best of me but I stayed back. The sounds were muffled but they couldn't be mistaken.
"Where is she Zac? Where is my daughter, I have a right to her." Some more loud banging then footsteps were getting closer.
"Nikki get out of this house!" Zac's voice was louder now booming with anger and aggression.
I swear Lily's room door was locked but that didn't stop it from swinging open. There stood Nikki, her face almost as red as the blouse she was wearing. In one quick movement I grabbed Lily from off the ground and held her close to me.
"You!" She said with her bony finger pointing at me. "I knew you were the key to getting my daughter back but I didn't know you were trying to steal her from me. Give her to me now Kylie." Her eyes were lit up with anger as she looked at me with Lily in my arms.
Before I could react Zac was standing in front of me with an arm securely keeping me behind him. Jayden was holding Nikki as she tried pushing her way towards Lily and I. With all the commotion Lily began to cry and I had to try and soothe her down and try to put her to sleep.
"There you go NIkki. All you did was make her cry. I am telling you one last time to get the hell out!" Nikki broke the grasp that Jayden had on her arms and walked out of the house, but not without sending me a death glare.
"This isn't over Zac. She's my daughter and I'm going to court." She slammed her car door and sped off leaving everyone rigid and a little shocked as she just left. It was over for now but everyone knew it was far from being completely over.
"Zac, are you okay?" He nodded and grabbed Lily from me and just held her close to him. Breathing slowly in her scent as he rocked her back and forth. It was amazing to see the love of a father and daughter. The scene in front of me almost brought me to tears. I felt an arm snake around my waist and pull me in.
"I'll take you home." Jayden whispered in my ear. I nodded and said my good byes to Zac. He said that this meeting with Nikki changed everything. I wasn't sure what he meant but I knew that everything was going to change. As we walked out I remembered that I had driven here and not run like usual.
"Jayden, it's okay I drove here." Making my way to the car Jayden wrapped his arm around my waist again and pulled me around to face him. The look in his eyes was familiar as he started to lean in a little but he stopped.
"Please be safe." I nodded and he released me and walked back to his car. I climbed in the drivers seat of my car and headed back home. Getting home I felt drained. I locked up my car and walked in to the house and straight to the kitchen, following the smell of something delicious being cooked.
My mom had made a wonderful dinner and we all sat together eating dinner. It gave me a chance to catch up with my parents who seemed to always being working or not home when I am. At the end of dinner my dad excused himself and said good night. He had some large case going on at work and like the good lawyer he is he didn't tell us about it.
"Mom do you think I could talk to you about something?" I wanted to tell someone about what had happened today with Nikki. I wasn't a mother so I didn't know how Nikki was feeling and deep down I felt bad for her not being able to be with her child.
"What's up my little chickadee?" She made us both a cup of green tea and we walked into the living room so we could talk.
"It's about Zac and Lily." She nodded and I began telling her everything. I started with my daily visits to see them and make sure they were okay. I had told her how I began to feel like a really close person to Lily and that I cared about her as if she were my own. Then I got to today and how they had the meeting with Nikki. The whole time I talked she just sat there sipping her tea and listening to everything I had to say. When I finished she began to talk.
"I understand how you feel. From what you've told me I can tell that Zac is really protective of Lily and I can't blame him. If Nikki had just left them and she had problems with drugs and alcohol I wouldn't let her back into my child’s life either. But on the other hand she turned her life around. She got the help she needed to be back in her child’s life."
From what my mom was saying I knew where she was going with it. She felt that Nikki deserved to be in Lily's life, maybe not as a full guardian but at least having visiting privileges. It was the same way I felt.
"I fell like one of your patients." I told her as she started to play with my hair. As I had told the story I ended up lying down in her lap and she played with my hair. My mother being a therapist and started to over analyze everything and at a certain point I had to cut her off before she charged me for every hour.
"Honey, what ever happens please know that your father and I are both here for Zac. If he needs help we will help. I'm sure your father would love to represent him." I smiled at my mother and gave her a kiss good night before I went upstairs to get ready for bed.
