"My people died because I loved them."

We looked at each other with fire in the eyes.

"You know what?"

"What?",
I spat at him with venom in my voice, although I was breaking on the inside right now.

"Maybe you should've died instead of her."

A FEW MOMENTS AGO

I looked at the sky with adorning eyes. I watched as the snow fell down with grace and such beauty. Exhaling deeply, I watched how a huff of warm air escaped my lips.

I was totally amazed. The snow scrunched beneath our feet as we walked the hiking path together.

"Thank you.",
I thanked the male to my right.

"Huh? Why?",
he asked me with questioning eyes.

"Thank you for bringing me here, It's just what I needed.",
I told him with a smile.

He gave me a sweet smile before looking at the path infront of us again.

"No problem, El.",
he replied happily.

Working as a doctor is not easy. Night shifts and emergency cases robbed me of sleep, sleep that I needed. If it hadn't been for my brother, I probably still would've been walking through the hospital, checking on patients while living from coffe and instant ramen.
He practically dragged me out of the napping fort I had built to get some hours of sleep.

It was winter and the snow fell like there was no tomorrow. Carefully, I took out my polaroid camera before taking a picture of the scenery infront of me.

"Should I take a picture of you?",
Wilbur asked me.

I accepted gladly before positioning myself nest to a big tree which was covered in snow.
Wilbur took a few steps back, not realizing that there were rocks behind him.
My eyes widened.

"Wilbur be careful!",
I warned quickly, but I was too late. He slipped over one of the rocks, and fell down backwards. The camera slipped out of his hand and hurled against one of them, shattering into a hundred pieces in the result.

Tears started forming in my eyes before I rushed over to see what's left of the camera. Walking past him, I crouched down before taking the broken pieces into my hand.

"No.",
I said as my heartbeat increased.

"No!",
I repeated before letting out a weak exhale as I fought back the tears.

"Thanks for helping me up.",
Wilbur said mockingly before dusting off the snow from his pants.

"What have you done?",
I turned around and screamed at him.
He looked bewildered at my sudden outburst as he scrached the back of his neck.

"Uh, I'm sorry? I'll buy you a new one.",
he mumbled while being unsure of his own words.

He looked at my messed up state before sighing.

"Hey, it's no bis deal, I'll buy you a new one. Now stand up.",
he stated calmly as he streched out his hand.

I refused grabbing his hand as I glared at him.

"You can't buy a new one...",
I wandered off as I looked at the ground.

He scoffed.

"And why? It's only a camera.",
he remarked arrogantly.

"THIS WAS MOMS CAMERA!",
I screamed at him.

At that, his eyes hardened.

Our mom always treated us like slaves. We had to take care of ourselves since we were kids. She always came home drunk, and punished us for little things.

One day, she forced me into a car and started driving, although she was drunk.
Of course, we had an accident which resulted with me losing my memory and my mom dying.

That's what Wil told me.

I couldn't imagine how my life was before the accident, but it sounded cruel. And although Wilbur claimed that she was evil and far from a good mom, I couldn't help but have a warm feeling in my chest when thinking about her.

Wilbur threw away everything that could help me remember her, not knowing that I actually managed to save the camera.

"Why did you keep that thing?",
he asked while looking at the camera with a disgusted expression.

"I kept it because she was still our mom!";
I defended myself.

"SHE WAS EVRYTHING BUT A MOM ELEANOR, GET THAT INTO YOUR LITTLE BRAIN.",
he screamed at me.

"SHE STILL LOVED US!",
I sobbed.

"SHE FREAKING ABUSED US BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS FUNNY!",
he screamed with rage before trying to calm down.

"Look, I did what I did for a reason. I wanted to move on. I wanted to forget my life with her and I wanted to start a new life.",
he spoke calmly.

I scoffed through my tears,

"You only threw them away because you were too weak to forget her by yourself.
You loved her too, admit it.",
I mocked him.

We looked at eachother with fire in the eyes.

"You know what?"

"What?",
I spat at him with venom in my voice, and that although I was breaking on the inside right now.

"Maybe you should've died instead of her.",
he said, not being able to control himself.

My eyes widened before I took a step back.

He didn't just say that.

I looked at him with disbelief as he finally realzed what he had done.

"You didn't mean that.",
I said, my voice cracking at the end.

He took a step forward and tried to reach out for me, but I stepped backwards, avoiding his touch.

"El, I-I'm sor-"

"Shut up.",
I interrupted him while giving him a cold glare.

He turned silent and looked at the ground, regretting his words.
Turning around slowly, we continued our journey, tension thick in the air.

Silence surrounded us as the both of us had guilt cursing through our veins. We were high up in the mountains, but I couldn't help but feel suffocated. The sky seemed darker than before and the snow didn't look as graceful as before.

It felt like we were walking a burning path.

It was so... silent.

I looked at the path infront of us with empty eyes. I felt like I was deaf. not relizing what happened around us as I kept on walking forward.

Slowly, a figure appeared in my vision. A dark figure, which was getting near with every step it took.

It was a man.

He ran to us like his life depended on it, but took a abrupt halt infront of us. He was wearing a lab-coat.

A scientist?

I looked at him with confusion and shock as I eyed his messed up hair, the many bruises and wounds and the blood dripping from his coat

He panted while looking at us with wide eyes.
He opened his mouth and it was that one word, that made my body shiver and my blood freeze cold.

"Run"
