Child's Play

I was shook awake about halfway through the time duration of the flight.
Groggily, I pushed myself upright, glancing out of the window which revealed nothing but darkness.

Suddenly the plane trembled, and I jerked straight in my seat.

"Just a little turbulence, Miss. Nothing to worry." The pilot upfront called out, seemingly sensing my alarm.

Happy hadn't been available again, so I was left to fend for myself without being able to seek comfort in the presence of a known person.

"Yeah... thank you." I muttered, not sure if he heard, but not energetic enough to raise my voice either.

Just as I began to sink into the leather to get comfortable, the jet quivered again, along with a whirring noise that had me concerned.

"Uh... are you sure this is normal?" I questioned, looking around.

"Perfectly fine, Miss." He assured, slightly chuckling. "Happens sometimes. I'll let you know if something... well, not normal, happens. Don't wo-"

I never got to hear the end of that statement because at that moment the entire plane lurched. My gut twisted and I felt like I was going to be sick. A spew of curses left the pilot's mouth and suddenly we were tumbling through the air at speeds that seemed to rearrange the organs in my body.

"What's happening!" I yelled, clutching onto my seat tightly as we were thrown up.

"I don't know!" He shouted back, panicked and frightened. "I can't control it!"

"Can't you make an emergency landing?!"

"We're in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! There is no landing!"

Knowing that if no one did anything, we would fall to our deaths, I shut my eyes tight, ignoring the screams of terror from the pilot as I concentrated everything within me to control the currents.

A second later I ripped open my eyes, all colour fading from my face.

Why isn't it working?!

I gripped the seat and my nails sunk into the soft leather, my heart dropping just like the jet we were in.

"We'll have to jump!"

The statement knocked the breath out of me and my eyes widened in horror.

"What!"

"It's the best chance we've got, Miss."
I could barely see the glistening of his eyes and the realization hit me like bricks that this really was happening.

We were going to die.

I shook my head harshly. After everything I've been through, I refuse to die by a falling plane. Much less, with an innocent man who was here only because of me. His death would on my hands.

I shut my eyes again, focusing all my will-power I had into using my abilities. A moment later, I cried out in frustration.

Nothing. Not a thing!
I couldn't feel the currents at all, I couldn't sense anything in the air. It was like I'd never had any control on the element.

"Willow? WILLOW!" I screamed his name with no response.

Goddamn it! Where is he?!

"Miss," The pilot caught my attention once more, "we have to jump now."

I shook my head again.

I didn't know how to swim, never learned, content just to stand around splashing in pools. If I jumped, there was no way I'd survive it. And without my powers to fly, it was a certainty that I would drown.
