We walked into the service station in our pyjamas. No shoes or socks on. It was so cold. I was so grateful for my snugly pyjamas.
I was holding Billy's hand so tightly, like he would be ripped away from me if I let it go.
Billy said we need to try and not cry. We don't want to draw attention to ourselves.
We walked into the paper store.
It was quiet and the old lady behind the counter looked friendly.
Billy gave her his best smile
"Excuse me, we seem to have lost our parents" I choked at this comment, and a tear trickled down my face, he squeezed my hand. "Would you mind if I used your phone please? My battery has died".
"Of course you can sweetheart" The old lady replied "anything for such a polite young man" she smiled at us.
She handed Billy the landline phone and he typed grandmas number. How did he know it? I hadn't spoken to her in years.
"Hey Grandma it's Billy, how are you?" He sounded so casual. But I suppose how should you sound when you're telling someone that their daughter is dead at the hands of her husband.
"Grandma, we've got ourselves in a little situation and have lost mum and dad, could you come and pick us up please? We're at the service station on the M6" he said his goodbyes to her and said she'll be here within the hour.
He thanked the lovely lady and we walked out.
I was desperate for the loo so we went and did our business and met back in the foyer.
"Are you hungry?" Billy asked me
"I think I feel sick to be honest Bill"
"You should try and eat something"
He sat me down at a table by the window and went to the services bakery and got us some food and a drink.
"How did you pay for this?" I asked, I wanted to talk about something to get my mind off things.
"It's not my finest hour Morgan. I would rather not discuss it"
I crossed my arms and stared him out. "Fine" he looked around to make sure no one could hear and said "I swiped some blokes wallet from the men's room".
Oh. I see why he didn't want to say anything.
We sat by the window after picking at our food and finishing off our drinks, when an old and very muddy Land Rover pulled up out front.
Billy took my hand and we walked outside. I looked at the woman in the drivers seat, she looked just like my mum, only older with greyer hair. I missed my mum so much. I started to cry again.
Billy opened up the back door and helped me in, he took a blanket off the seat and covered me up.
It was so cold. The blanket smelt cold and a bit fusty. He climbed in the seat next to Grandma.
"Granny's here now my little sunflowers " she smiled at me and Billy, put the Land Rover in gear and took off.
Present day
I'm sitting in a diner eating a cheeseburger and fries across from a very busy nightclub. Watching the drunk bodies walking around and falling about themselves.
I've been in this country for around 2 years. And it's honestly 'same shit, different day'.
I sit back in my seat and put my ear pods in. Drowning out the sounds of normal people milling around doing their normal things.
Thinking back to a time that put me where I am today...
After an hour of driving we turn up a dirt track and I see a small broken sign 'more house farm'.
Granny has a farm! I love animals. When I'm older I want to be a vet.
I've been studying animals since I can remember.
Everything about them fascinates me. Did you know adult lions pretend to be hurt by the bites of their young to encourage their strength? Fascinating!
The closer we got to the house I noticed there wasn't any animals, lots of out buildings but no animals.
I wiped the tears from my eyes as my vision was blurry. Billy was very quiet too, I know he doesn't like crying in front of people.
Granny stopped the car. "Come on my little sunflowers, let's get you in and cleaned up, we need to talk".
Billy walked round the Land Rover, picked me up and carried me in to the house. We cuddled as he walked.
We sat down around granny's kitchen table. She made a pot of tea and got some cake out of the cupboard.
"Ok my little sunflowers, spill".
Billy picked up his tea and I could see his hand shaking and a tear ran down his cheek.
"You were right Granny, they're here". I looked at Billy with wide eyes.
What the hell was happening??
Present day
A loud scream made me snap out of my relaxed state, I pulled my ear pods out and looked out the window.
It was just a woman being flung over the shoulder of a man, she was laughing so I'm guessing they knew each other.
If only they knew what lurked in the shadows.
