Around 6 months after my 15th birthday, Granny called a meeting. All 20 of us were cooped up in the cow shed.
"The vamps seem to be turning more people then they ever have before. It seems they are biting to change, rather then biting to feed".
Dez piped in "We're thinking they are building an army"
"But vamps are fairly solitary creatures, it's rare to find a pack bigger than 5 or 6? Why would they come together now?" Tony said. Tony was our weapons guy and an excellent cook.
" we don't know" Dez said, "but Jo has an idea" he looked at my Granny
"I am asking Meredith to join our group" she said.
There were gasps and growls coming from the room.
"Meredith is a witch!! We can't trust her!" Shouted Simon.
"Witch or not she is a friend and she wants to help. I know you've had bad experiences with witches Si but Merry is different. She's a natural witch and doesn't dabble in dark magic, she believes she's created a potion to help stop the venom spreading once it's in the hosts body".
"If this is true then we can stop the army being built? Or at least slow it down!" Agreed Marcus.
"She's travelling here tomorrow, she'll stay in the house with me, you will treat her with respect and part of the team".
"Yes Jo" they all said in unison.
We walked out of the shed when the meeting finished, I was walking with Billy "how cool Bill! To meet a witch! I bet she's awesome" I said,
"I bet she's got a hunchback, long fingers and a huge hairy wart on her nose" he replied. We just laughed.
The next day Meredith arrived.
She was definitely not what we were expecting.
She. Was. Beautiful!
She was around 5'7 with straight platinum blonde hair to her waist. She was slim with delicate features. She had icy blue eyes and pale skin. She was around 22 and not much older then Billy.
She hugged Granny when she arrived and Granny introduced her to us. She and Billy just stared at each other for what seemed like forever. Granny took my hand and walked us away leaving them alone.
The next day I had finished my sword training with Matiás and was almost done with my session with Wang when Meredith breezed over.
I say breezed because her movements always looked so effortless.
"Come with me Morgan" she held her hand out to me. I took it. I felt completely in awe of her.
We walked through the woods. She touched every tree. She took my hand and placed it on an old oak tree.
"Can you feel that Morgan? The life force of this beautiful tree is so strong, just like you". I kept my hand on it but couldn't feel anything.
"I can't feel anything" I whispered.
Meredith placed her hand on top of mine. "Close your eyes Morgan. Imagine an acorn falling to the ground, the acorn gets buried in the ground, Mother Earth decides that this acorn has so much more the give and sends nutrients from the earth to help it grow. Imagine the first sprout of a leaf, the first sign of life. Imagine the rain falling and washing away all of the impurities. Imagine the tree growing. Imagine it growing to 6 feet, 12 feet, 20 feet, imagine the birds building a nest in its branches. The squirrels feeding on the acorns it provides. Imagine the clean air surrounding this tree." Her voice was like a whisper in the back of my mind.
I could feel a slow, steady and gentle pulse under my hand. I opened my eyes and realised I was now leaning into the tree, my face in its bark.
Merediths hand was no longer on mine. I looked at the tree. I can see a faint light of blue and brown colours surrounding it.
Whoa.
Meredith held my hand again. "The tree has a similar aura as you. A little seedling that will grow up to be a wonderful protector and a loyal companion to anyone or anything that needs her. You can let go now Morgan".
I removed my hand from the tree. Meredith smiled at me. "You are strong and loyal Morgan, and you will help define this world one day. You just need to believe you can grow as big as this oak tree." I didn't know what to do so I just smiled at her.
"Protect nature, and nature will protect you". She smiled at me and we walked back to the house.
