Tsukishima's POV
Finally we were back from our patrol. I went back to the little apartment room Yamaguchi and I shared. He didn't seem to be back yet, so I took the time to rest in the quiet.
After a while, the door opened. I looked over to see Yamaguchi walk in with a small bag. He smiled and me, closing and locking the door before wandering over and setting the bag down.
"Hi Tsukki. How was today?"
"It was fine. You?"
"Well... it makes me sad to see so many hurt and dying people.. but, it feels good to be able to help who I can."
"Mm."
"Well, I got us our rations for the evening on the way home."
"Oh?"
"Here you go!" Yamaguchi said, handing me some sort of sandwich wrapped up. He got his own out and sat with me to eat. We ate in relative silence, and after we were done, we disposed of the wrappers and Yamaguchi set the reusable bag by the door to return for reuse.
I climbed into the bed with a tired sigh, Yamaguchi wandering over and climbing in with me. We laid down together underneath the blanket, facing each other. Yamaguchi smiled at me and offered to set my glasses aside since the nightstand was on his side of the bed.
I let him take my glasses off and watched as he rolled over and put them down before looking back at me. He scooted a little closer to keep warm, and I didn't mind so I let him.
"Hey, Yamaguchi?"
"Uh huh?"
"Before this all happened, did you have any girlfriends or, anything?" I asked. I'm not sure why I asked.. but I was curious. And if we were going to share a space together, then we may as well know each other.
"Oh, no not really."
"No?"
"No. I guess I can tell you since you told me you were dating Kuroo before. I always was kinda interested in guys."
"Oh, I see. So, any past boyfriends, in that case?"
"A few. None of them were any good though."
"Mm. I understand that." I said with a sigh. Yamaguchi tilted his head and scooted even closer so that his face was close to mine.
"Do you wanna talk about it??"
"..There's not really anything to talk about. He and I dated when I was 16. And we found no sense in breaking up after the outbreak. So we were just... on autopilot from then on. We were only together for the sex, I suppose." I said, Yamaguchi blushing. A tiny smile tugged at my lips at his expression and the red on his cheeks.
"O-Oh! I, uhm-"
"Sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
"No no! It's Okay I'm the one who asked if you wanted to talk about it." Yamaguchi said quickly with a smile.
"You sure?"
"Yeah of course! Anyway... I'm sorry to hear that.."
"No need to be sorry."
"Well, I mean... it doesn't sound like you guys were very happy if you were just, on autopilot and together for sex.."
"We weren't. Not really."
"...Did you ever really, love each other??"
"..."
"Sorry! You don't have to answer..!"
"No, it's alright. I don't know about Kuroo. But, I did like him a lot when I first met him. But, who cares anymore..."
"Well, just because you guys weren't 'in love' after a while, you were still together with him for 8 years you said. So.. it'd be okay for you if you were, you know, hurt or upset about it."
"Well.. I'm not."
"Heh.. That's good then. But, if you ever feel upset about it, I'll be here okay?" Yamaguchi said with a smile.. A cute smile.
"...Thanks." I said quietly, Yamaguchi nodding and yawning. He snuggled up closer and fell asleep with his face nuzzled in my chest. I looked down at him quietly, glancing out the window before slowly putting my arms around him.
I pulled him closer to me in silence, gently nuzzling my face into his hair. It felt comforting getting to hold him, and I liked him holding onto me like this.. Even in the middle of all this and when there were overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, this moment felt safe. So I fell asleep easily for the first time in a long time.
Next Day
"Hey Tsukishima. Ready to get going? We'll be going out to meet another group today." Ennoshita said when I met him at the gates with the others for the patrol. I nodded, all of us heading out. Ennoshita suggested I start learning and trying to memorize these routes for when I'd eventually be able to do paired, and then solo patrols.
I did my best to memorize the trails, and it wasn't too bad. They seemed to keep the paths pretty cleared and it was trampled from the walking. My mind wandered a bit. I know I should serious be focusing when out here, but my mind was thinking about last night.
Really, I want to go home and go back to cuddling with Yamaguchi.. It felt nice. But he and I had to do this to be able to stay. And it kept us safe. My mind was brought back to reality when someone in the group told us all to stop.
"Hey wait. There's something over there." They said, pointing in the distance. We all moved more carefully since we couldn't tell what it was yet. But the movements didn't exactly look like the infected move. Usually infected had jagged and uneven movements.
"Those look like people." I said, Ennoshita nodding.
"I agree, but still, be careful. We don't know who they are, and they don't look like anyone from our settlement." He mumbled quietly. As we got closer, I raised my brows. I was about to say something when Ennoshita pointed his gun at the, indeed humans.
"Hey, who're you. And what're you doing here." He said cautiously. I sighed, putting my hand on Ennoshita's gun and aiming it away from the mini group.
"Good to see you, Bokuto. Akaashi."
