Yamaguchi's POV
"Tsukki... you-"
"I know. I can't stay here. I wouldn't dare stay and risk you or anyone else here." Tsukki said as he quietly rolled the fabric of his sleeve back down and got up. I felt tears well up as I grabbed onto him.
"I'm coming with you...!"
"No. You're safe here. And you coming with me would only get you killed."
"But-"
"I'm so sorry Yama. But I need to go, now. You know it'll spread in 24 hours. You stay here, and stay safe, okay?"
"Tsukki..."
"I love you." Tsukki said, pulling me off of him. A few tears fell down my cheeks as he smiled faintly. He didn't dare kiss me, scared he'd get me sick. So, he simply turned around and left.
Tsukishima's POV
"Hey, let me out."
"Eh? Aren't you one of the guys who just got back from the horde clearing?"
"Yeah."
"...And you wanna go back out?"
"Yes."
"..Alright, sign out." The man standing watch said. He slid me the notebook as I signed my name and walked off. The only reason I came back was to tell Yama I love him. Pft. Who knew that after finding someone I love would turn out like this. Only a day after being with him, now I was pretty much sentenced to death.
Well, at least I had found him before this happened and I knew he was somewhere safe. I had gotten him to that settlement where he could be protected. He was so kind, he'd surely find someone else. He could be very happy there. Maybe get a kid like Daichi and Suga have.
All Daichi would do when I ran into him before patrols would boast about his daughter and husband. I could see Yama with a child. Quite easily. He'd make a good father. I doubt I'd be a good father though. My patience was low already, I don't think a child would be exactly my forte.
Oh well. I shrugged it off and just walked. No idea where I was going, but I knew it'd have to be far from that settlement. The thought of dying in this hellhole never particularly scared me. And now that Kuroo, Kenma, and Yama were all safe. It didn't matter what happened to me.
Larger time skip: Several weeks Later: Yamaguchi's POV
"Yamaguchi??" I slowly looked up when the door to the small apartment room opened.
"Hi Suga..."
"You okay..?" He asked gently, walking over to me. He sat on the bed next to me, placing his hand on my shoulder. No. I wasn't okay. Tsukki was surely dead by now. Just the thought was sickening. I was terrified of it happening to me. I never realized how much worse it was happening to him..
"No.. Not really."
"I'm so sorry about what happened to Tsukishima."
"I wish he would have let me go with him."
"He left so he could protect you and everyone else."
"...Can I go on patrols?"
"What?"
"Well.. I want to protect the others like Tsukki did.. He was only here for a bit over a week, or however long it was.. and he already died for this place."
"But you, no offense, can't fight."
"..A traveling medic in group patrols could be useful."
"Well... I guess you're right.. Let me talk to Daichi about it for you. Okay?" Suga said with a small smile. I nodded, accepting his hug as he got up and left.
I sighed softly to myself, looking down at the bed. Suga was right, I couldn't fight. I was pretty useless in that aspect. But, I wanted to be able to go out there and help in some way. Any way. I just hope that if Daichi agrees, I won't get in the way of anyone.
The next morning, I was woken up to knocks at the door. I sighed, dragging myself out of bed and opening the door. I laughed faintly, picking up Daichi and Suga's daughter who was accompanying her dad.
"Hi Yamaguchi." Daichi said gently.
"Hi.."
"Suga spoke to me and said you want to go on a patrol?"
"Yeah.. I figured it'd be a way that I can.. help if anyone gets hurt out in the field. Or if we came across any other survivors, I'd know how to check them." I said, Daichi nodding.
"I've thought about it, and I'll let you go. But you need to stay close to the group okay?"
"I understand."
"Good. If things get dangerous or you wish to go back to the medics building, you're free to, okay?" Daichi said with a smile. I nodded and gently set his daughter down after she gave me a big hug. She really was precious.
"Thank you, Daichi."
"Of course. Take today to rest and prepare. Tomorrow morning, meet them at the gates, okay?"
"Okay."
Daichi's POV
I left Yamaguchi's home and went back outside. My daughter hopping and getting her shoes muddy. I laughed faintly, picking her up to try and minimize the damage.
"Come on baby, I need to go talk to your dad." I mumbled, walking to the medics building. Suga and I don't want our daughter in there since it was full of dying and bloody soldiers. So I asked Hinata who stayed at the ground level to go get him.
"Hi Daichi. What're you doing here???" Suga asked, giving me and our daughter a kiss.
"I just came to let you know that Yamaguchi is going to be going on a group patrol in the morning. One on a safer and daily checked trail. But he won't be here to help today or tomorrow."
"So you are gonna let him go?"
"I think he'll be safe with the group. But I also think he needs to go."
"Oh?"
"He clearly still misses Tsukishima, despite having lost him weeks ago. The two must have meant a lot to each other. Going on a patrol could be all he has left of him."
"I guess you're right.."
"Maybe a patrol or two will be his way of a contribute to Tsukishima. We all have to find our own ways to grieve in this world."
