Effie didn't stay in her room that night, or for almost a week after that. She stayed with Malfoy, he convinced her that he could keep her safer if she slept next to him— typical boy. She didn't complain though, she'd never witnessed him be this caring, he was starting to show how truly felt for her, and that's all she had ever wanted.
There was just one problem with their relationship, as long as Malfoy was marked as a follower of the Dark Lord, they could never properly be together and it played on her mind twenty four seven, all she wanted was a normal life, not one where the boy she liked was practically employed as her body guard/undercover assassin.
Classes had finished for the week, and everyone was getting ready for the quidditch match tomorrow— Slytherin v Ravenclaw. It was going to be a good one, Ravenclaw had just bet Gryffindor last week so Slytherin would definitely feel as if they had something to prove.
Effie wasn't the biggest fan of quidditch, she would still go to the game usually, but she wasn't as hyped up as all the other Slytherins about tomorrow's match, nor was Malfoy. The pair decided to hide in the library working on their homework from this week.
They both sat at a table up the back of the library, a spot that no one seemed to know about, it was completely calm.
One thing that Malfoy and Effie had in common was they enjoyed silence, each other's silence especially, they'd sit studying for hours, shooting the occasional glance at one another then straight back to their work.
Effie was good at making it look like she was working hard, when really her head was in a whole other space, all she could think of was how much she wanted to be with this boy sitting in front of her, she didn't want people after her, she didn't want to be killed. All she could think about was how amazing it would be if things were different.
"Earth to Effie." Effie snapped out of her daydream to Malfoy clicking his fingers in front of her face. "You okay?"
"Yeah sorry." She blinked, trying to come back to reality.
"You sure? You zoned out for about five minutes there, what's on your mind?" He prompted, lightly brushing his foot up her leg under the table.
Effie knew she could talk to Malfoy about anything, but this. It felt different, she knew that it would make him feel horrible, he would feel that it was his fault, like it was him holding them back from being what she wanted.
"Honestly, I was just thinking— it's nothing important. I'm fine." She shot him a reassuring smile.
"We should get back, it's getting late." He nodded to the clock.
Effie took a quick glance at the time— eleven forty five.
"Getting late. It's two hours past curfew. Let's go." She shot up out of her seat, now only just noticing that the library was empty.
The pair tip toed down the stone corridor, Hogwarts was always freezing and dark, but it wasn't always as eery as it was tonight. It was more silent than ever before, not a peep came from any painting, in fact when Effie actually looked properly the paintings were nothing but black, as if the paintings were hiding from something.
Effie held onto Malfoy's hand, feeling uneasy, something didn't feel right, it felt as if trouble was only just around the corner.
They kept to the sides of the corridors that were engulfed in shadows making sure it was harder for anyone else to see them.
All of a sudden Draco grabbed Effie by the waist and dragged her behind one of the pillars and instantly covering her mouth.
"Shhh" He demanded, still holding her by her waist as if his life depended on it.
